The Nobel Committee decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize to WORLD FOOD PROGRAMME(WFP) for its efforts to combat hunger, and for its contributions to amend conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas.
WFP is one of the first agencies on the ground in global emergencies, pandemics and other disasters. In 2019, the WFP assisted 100 million people in over 90 countries who were victims of food insecurity and hunger.
The Worldwide Corona pandemic also inflated the number of poor and hungry. Despite several challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, WFP is adapted to meeting various needs created by the COVID-19 pandemic and made a significant contribution to restoring the world to its former glory.

Established in 1961 (Ordered by US President Dwight Eisenhower) as an experiment to provide food aid through the UN system, WFP is to be reassessed within three years. As crises escalate, the trial proves its worth.
In Northern Iran, September 1962, an earthquake strikes the area of Boein Zehra. Over 12000 people were dead. Thousands of houses and buildings were destroyed. Even though the WFP institution existed for only a few months, it quickly sends survivors 1500 metric tons of wheat, 270 tons of sugar, and 27 tons of tea. This was the first official success of the WFP.
WFP launched its first programme in 1963 in association with Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) and United Nations General Assembly for Nubians in Sudan.
The core policies that govern WFP are to save lives of refugee in emergencies; improve nutrition and quality of life; promote world food security.
WFP has attracted significant attraction among celebrities. Drew Barrymore, an American actress, director, and producer donated 1 million dollars to support the efforts of the organization.
Football stars Kaka and Ronaldinho, alongside names Penelope Cruz, and Sean Connery has also supported the efforts made by the WFP.
Global superstar, The Weeknd has been a generous supporter of various organizations and even donated 1 million dollars to the UN World Food Programme’s relief efforts in Ethiopia. He has been named a Global Goodwill Ambassador.

“The UN World Food Programme is doing urgent and important work to change and save lives daily and I feel passionately addressing world hunger and helping people in need. Our partnership is an authentic extension of all our efforts and intentions to help those in need and bring an end to so much suffering.” said Abel The Weekend Tesfaye.
In line with its 2010 HIV and AIDS policy, WFP’s HIV work has a strong focus on linking food and health systems through the provision of nutrition and food aid for better health outcomes, such as nutritional recovery for malnourished living with HIV and TB patients, retention in care programmes and treatment success.
In spite of the relentless efforts made by the WFP to reduce hunger and malnutrition globally, more must be done to ensure that everyone has access to food they need to lead healthy lives. This requires more involvement from the government as well as the private sector.
Moving forward, it is vital that we support the WFP in its efforts to create a world where there is sufficient food for everyone. By working together, we can help build a sustainable future for all.
