HUMANITARIAN SUMMIT
World Humanitarian Summit (WHS) took place at Istanbul, Turkey, on 23 to 24th May, 2016. It was organized to discuss Humanitarian issues and to come up with ideas to enhance the protection of public against conflicts and disasters. Ban Ki-Moon, the Secretary-General of the United Nations took an initiative in organizing this summit.
The summit was called to address the suffering after the Second World War. It aimed to recommitting to humanitarian principles. Its goal was to bring the global community together to commit to new ways to save lives.
The summit involved five core responsibilities which are to prevent and end conflict; respect rules of war; leave no one behind; working differently to end need; invest in humanity. The three main goals of the Summit were to perk up and reenergize the humanity and an obligation to establish human principles.
Second was to prepare a set of actions and commitments which are to be followed by different communities and countries and aimed to for a better response towards crises. Third was to share practices which help to protect lives, reduce suffering and highlighting the community most affected by crises.
People from different communities and nations participated in the summit.
According to the United Nations report, 700 NGOs which included 350 national and local NGOs and CSOs along with 250 international
NGOs and 350 representatives of the United Nations were present. 9,000 participants from 173 Member States of the United Nations, including 55 Heads of State and Government. 130 representatives of the United Nations agencies, funds and programmes and other stakeholders including academia, faith-based leaders, media and others also participated in the first-ever World Humanitarian Summit.
Disappointment was shown by the Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon on the absence of some of the world’s most powerful leader. However, at the closing press conference, Ban Ki-Moon stated "The absence of these leaders from World Humanitarian Summit does not provide an excuse for inaction."
The Summit generated many initiatives for the global humanitarian agenda and to reduce humansuffering. 51 Commitments were made to reform humanitarian financing to make emergency aid finance more efficient and effective. These set of 51 commitments was named Grand Bargain. It
included topics of transparency, Use of Cash, Multi-year funding. Global Partnership for preparedness was launched to help countries to get ready for future disasters. It will help 20 most at-risk countries to prepare at a basic level. Education Cannot Wait fund was introduced in the summit. It became the world’s first fund which prioritizes education. Several countries took initiative of financing the fund out of which UK committed £30 million.
