- the influence of audience and purpose
- the context of the texts

- Review your notes on these texts
- Re-read the two texts
- Plan your 3-4 main paragraphs
- Write your topic sentences
- Choose what quotations you might analyse for each paragraph
- Practise embedding and contextualising them in full sentences
- Pick out what you will analyse from each quotation and terminology you will use in your analysis. Remember, however, that you need to focus on how the writers describe their experiences / what is revealed about their experiences.
- Write an introduction which contextualises the two texts clearly and sets out the initial point of comparison
- Look over the model essay and notes for ideas on how to write your essay and what phrases to use
- Begin writing each paragraph
To what extent are the generic conventions similar?
Are the audiences seen as similar?
How do the texts contrast in tone and register, but both reflect upon contemporary issues?
How do they contrast (and compare) in overall structure?
To what extent do they differ in the internal structuring of paragraphs and overall address to the reader? Are these considerations influenced by subject matter as much as by the author’s approach?
