Goals

Student Learning Outcomes 

Upon successfully completing this English C1000 course, students will be able to:

1. Develop an argumentative essay with a clear thesis and with subclaims in support of the main argument. 

2. Analyze texts to support claims, identify the strategies authors use to create meaning, and critically engage with the larger significance of key concepts. 

3. Construct clear and organized writing that demonstrates an awareness of audience and purpose. 

4. Critically engage with topics from multiple points of view, with attention to issues of identity, power, privilege, opportunity, social justice, and/or related themes and key concepts. 

Note:  All English 020 materials are combined with the English C1000 materials to make this easier.  Students who pass English C1000 automatically pass English 020.

Student Learning Outcomes for English 020 (connected extra hour of instruction to increase student success).   Students will be able to:

1. Earn a passing grade in ENGL C1000 (Freshman Composition).

2. Utilize the various phases in the writing process—prewriting, writing revision, and proofreading—to produce clear, well-supported, well-organized essays.

3. Using meta-language of effective writing, describe the ways in which their own work and the work of other students meets or fails to meet the standards and structures of required essay assignments.
