Overall Results

One of my main goals of this project to was to reduce misbehavior that occurs during recess when the playground is closed due to weather and other circumstances by 50%. It has been communicated to me that blacktop only recess can be a total nightmare. In an effort to help change that, I placed these new games and activities to increase student engagement during recess. These games give students something to partake in at recess - they are no longer limited to just basketball and four square!

An additional goal of mine was to increase the amount of cooperation between students through adding more games where more students can engage and play.

I made these goals measurable by sending out a survey to all of the teachers at the beginning of the school year to create a baseline. I then followed up with a very similar survey a month later to understand how my project has helped.

Survey 1 results: Week of September 1, 2020

This survey asked teachers to fill out their answers based on the behavior they observed in PREVIOUS school years - without this new blacktop painting.

Question 1:

On a scale from 1-10 how would you describe the behavior during blacktop only recess/outdoor time?

Results: Average rating of 4.7 out of 10

Question 2:

On a scale from 1-10 how is the cooperation between students during recess?

Results: Average rating of 5 out of 10

"There wasn't much for them to do and get bored quickly"

"Students are very bored on the blacktop. There is not enough for them to do. The balls quickly roll off the blacktop and then they're running in the grass after it, which defeats the purpose of "blacktop" only. I've also seen scuffles break out because the kids are crowded around the basketball hoop. There are too many kids in one small area."

"Students are very disrespectful to recess aides, especially when it is a blacktop only game. I am so glad you took the time to paint some additional game options for students. "

Survey 2 results: Week of October 8, 2020

This survey asked teachers to fill out their responses based on the behavior they observed since the additional of the new games.

Question 1:

On a scale from 1-10 how would you describe the behavior during blacktop only recess/outdoor time?

Results: Average rating of 9.9 out of 10!

That is a 100% increase!

Question 2:

On a scale from 1-10 how the cooperation between students during recess?

Results: Average rating 9.3 out of 10!

That is almost a 100% increase!
