Knockout PD is a fine motor program developed by four LVST BIG certified occupational therapy students and two OTD faculty members at Dominican University of California. The program in an occupation-based program that has Parkinson's specific exercises to help improve fine motor and manual dexterity. We are partnered with Rock Steady Boxing (RSB) Marin to develop, implement, and gather data outcomes for further use. We aim to give hope to those who have been diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease and allow them to "fight back" when they feel like they are up against the ropes.
We aim to inspire, motivate, and train individuals to combat symptoms with Parkinson’s Disease one jab, punch, and hook at a time.
We are committed to serve individuals diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease at Rocksteady Boxing Marin.
A creative and purposeful exercise program will be designed within their curriculum to maximize hand function in everyday activities.
The unique collaboration with the RSB program will be fully sustainable by 2020 to improve hand function which may lead to an increase of quality of life for Rocksteady athletes.
The Knock-Out PD program comes with a standardized manual that contains all the necessities to initiate and implement the program.
We hope to have a library of instructional videos for coaches, athletes, or anyone to be able to use to combat symptoms of PD. Below is an example:
We also created a library of infographics to help visual learners get the movement just right and give general information to individuals with concerns.
The program that we helped develop has received over $10,000 in grant funding. Our goal is to continue the study and gather outcome measures. A portion of the funds will be used for equipment and to hire students to help implement this program, while receiving credit for their required fieldwork experience. Once completed and data is collected a research team will analyze that data to measure health outcomes. Finally, we hope to publish that research and contribute to the field of occupational therapy and other health care professionals.
