As a first year student I was fortunate to take on the role of President of our student association. It was a rewarding and meaningful experience. It was this experience that pushed me to my full potential and dive deeper into the leadership world of occupational therapy. During my time as President I put on over a dozen events, raised over $4000, created more leadership opportunities for others, and much more. Below is a summary of events that took place. I must also state that this would have not been possible without the help of all of my peers that sat on the board with me and volunteered their time and effort.

The Assembly of Student Delegates (ASD) provides a mechanism for the expression of student concerns, and offers a means whereby students can have effective input into AOTA affairs. Annually, an ASD Representative from each OT and OTA educational program represents their peers at the ASD Annual Meeting. As a standing committee of the Board of Directors, the ASD Steering Committee serves the ASD membership by synthesizing student concerns to represent the student point of view to the Representative Assembly, the Commission on Practice, the Commission on Education, and all other bodies of AOTA as needed.
The Representative Assembly (RA) is the body of the Association which establishes professional policies and standards. It is your link to action on issues and concerns and concerns affecting occupational therapy.
The Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) was set up to represent students regarding health concerns, student well-being, and providing feedback on University wellness initiatives. The committee also educates and promotes health, medical and counseling services available on campus. During my time with this committee we created a space for students to visit to simply unwind, breathe, recenter and revive. This space was named, "The Zen Zone".
Mental health is so important and college can often times become overwhelming. This is why the Zen Zone was created and why we poured so much time and effort into giving students the space to relax and ground themselves. This has been one of my favorite projects so far and I hope it sparks a movement amongst other Universities with common spaces.
