WORKSHOP FACILITIES

Bowdoin College

A small residential liberal arts college in Midcoast Maine, Bowdoin College was founded in 1794 and enrolls roughly 1,800 students during the academic year. It is located in Brunswick, a bustling New England town easily accessible by foot from the College’s centrally located campus. In the summertime, Brunswick is a favorite stopping point for travelers headed Downeast, toward Maine’s iconic eastern coastal region. Bowdoin’s campus is also busy, as musicians and performers take over College spaces during the residential Bowdoin International Music Festival and summer season of the Maine State Music Theatre. The College is a roughly two-hour drive from Boston, to which it is also well connected via rail and private coach

Housing

On-campus, single-occupancy accommodations at Bowdoin will be made available to participants. All rooms are furnished with a bed, desk, chair, a wardrobe closet, and a dresser. We will strive to house all workshop participants in the same location on campus, though it is possible we may be spread across two college houses. Each workshop participant will arrive to find their bed made up with two sheets, one blanket, one pillow, and a pillowcase, as well as two towels and one washcloth. Bowdoin's residential spaces are not air-conditioned, however, a limited number of small fans are available for rent with a small deposit fee at the Summer Programs Information Desk (Thorne Dining Hall). Guests may bring their own fans, if desired.

Roux Center

Workshop activities will take place in Bowdoin’s Roux Center for the Environment, a LEED Platinum certified structure completed in 2018. The Roux Center’s distinctive Lantern will serve as a hub for our group throughout the week, and can - at the touch of a button - be transformed from an airy atrium with views of the Bowdoin pines into an auditorium for video essay and film screenings. Participants will also have access to studios in Bowdoin’s Media Commons for green screen filming and specialized audio recording and editing.

Dining

Meals will be prepared by Bowdoin College's award-winning Dining Service, recognized as one of the top food service programs across colleges and universities in the country. Our dining staff takes great care to provide a healthy, sustainable menu during the summer months, as well as during the academic year. Workshop participants will have the benefit of enjoying the harvest of Bowdoin's organic gardens, which provide a considerable amount of fresh vegetables offered as part of the daily menu. All meals feature vegetarian (V), vegan (VE), dairy free (DF), and gluten free (GF) menu options, with menus posted online daily.
