Since 2023, we have organised an annual PhD and Postdoc Symposium for early career researchers in our network. 

On Friday 17th of May 2024, we held our first faculty retreat at the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, bringing together senior members of our Unit for a day full of scientific and strategic discourse, providing an opportunity to review our Unit’s achievements and progress since our creation within ELLIS in 2020. 

We also welcomed (virtually) the Director of the ELLIS unit Amsterdam, Prof. Cees Snoek, who gave us some insight into the Amsterdam Unit’s initiatives and activities to help foster collaborations and interactions within their research community and beyond.

To conclude the day, we had research flashtalks by our newest Unit members, Emanuel Goncalves and Sérgio Pequito, who returned to Portugal from the UK and Sweden, respectively, to establish their own labs, in addition to catching up on the research of one of our longstanding Unit members, and ELLIS Fellow, Rodrigo Rodrigues. 

The ELLIS, AI4media, and AIDA Symposium on Large Language and Foundation Models brought together a notable lineup of speakers, panelists, and organisers from different AI subdisciplines in Europe to one of the most advanced technology capitals, Amsterdam. The event took place on 17-18 October, 2023 in Amsterdam, under the umbrella of ELLIS, AIDA, and AI4Media, with a view of drawing in a diverse AI population on the topic. The event was co-organised by ELLIS units in Amsterdam, Lisbon, Edinburgh and Darmstadt.
