Rachel Delaney

While Rachel had no memory of what occurred on the evening of the attack, its events and her mother's decisions would be the basis for her life. In the chaos, while defending their home, her father was brutally killed while her mother watched, unable to do anything to help him. She and her two young children were dragged to safety by onlookers and were among those who fled the capital that night. Alone and devastated, trying to raise her children while expecting another, Rachel's mom was desperate.

They found support in a women's shelter, where she adapted to life with humans and decided to forsake the lifestyle and identity that had led to them losing everything. She attended night classes and earned a GED before attending community college, meeting and eventually marrying a human man while her kids entered school. In abandoning her life, Rachel's mother built a new one, raising her kids as humans.

This made Rachel's childhood relatively stable, though not without its challenges. Living in the human world didn't eliminate her mother's fears, so Rachel and her siblings were held to strict rules. While these rules were not unreasonable, they caused tension and conflict within their family, particularly between her parents and older brother. Meanwhile, Rachel had built her friendship with a fragile and quiet boy at school, drawn to him first by her curiosity and grown by her protective and passionate nature which balanced out his vulnerable and mellow personality. Ben and Rachel were inseparable, and despite the periodic conflicts in her home, Ben was welcomed in and given a safe space when he had none.

The first sign of their true background was when her brother suddenly left their home without explanation outside of him supposedly going to live at a boarding school. As their family could not afford private school, and all of his belongings would go on to be removed from their house, Rachel grew concerned. Suddenly, his entire existence was absent from their family with his photos taken down, and any conversation about him shut down instantly. Rachel struggled to accept his absence while her family continued on, planting seeds of defiance for her departure in the future.

Friendly and energetic, Rachel made many friends, but her reputation was based on her quick temper. As she grew older, she only grew bolder in her defense of those who needed support and clashed with school administration as she regularly got into 'disagreements' with other students. Unfazed, she remained confident in her convictions, taking loners under her wing and casting out those who created conflict within their friend group. Despite generally being liked by her teachers, she struggled as a student due to trouble concentrating. While remaining upbeat, her subpar grades would place a damper on her self-esteem and would create tension between herself and her mom. Suddenly facing a new reality and discovering her identity, she hesitated as she was torn between believing the life she knew and chasing her curiosity about her mom's darkest secret.
