Activity Ideas :
Name of Activity/Game: Fraction Problems
Objective: M.4.1.12 : Ability to solve problems based on daily life situations, adding, and subtracting equal fractions with denominators.
The teacher begins by explaining that the students will shape an exciting story about "Mermaid Lara," who wonders what it would be like to be human. Groups of 4-5 students receive activity cards with fraction problems related to different aspects of human life, such as careers and hobbies. Each group selects a card, solves the fraction problem, and marks the chosen path for Lara. This process continues through various stages, including career, hobby, food, sports, and dreams. In the final stage, the students determine if Lara enjoyed being human or prefers to remain a mermaid. The teacher concludes by discussing Lara’s choices and the related fractions, then asks if the students enjoyed the activity.
Name of Activity/Game: Let’s Feed the BOBO
Objective : M.3.1.9. Bütün, yarım ve çeyreğin kesirle gösterimi için modellerden yararlanabilme
a) Bütün, yarım ve çeyrek modellerinin temsillerini tanır.
b) Bütün, yarım ve çeyrek modellerine uygun kesir temsillerini belirler.
c) Belirlediği temsili bütün, yarım ve çeyrek modelleri için kullanır.
The teacher places a teddy bear, Bobo, on a desk and tells his story, asking the class if they will help with his diet. After the class agrees, the teacher forms groups using the "Class Dojo" app. Each group receives three honeycomb pictures to cut into 1 whole, 2 halves, and 4 quarters to determine how much honey Bobo should eat. Groups place the honey amounts on plates and fill out activity sheets with the amounts in fractions and figures. For each diet day, a volunteer group demonstrates the fractional amounts, the class discusses them, and the correct amounts are recorded. This process repeats for each diet day.
Name of Activity/Game: Treasure Hunt
Objective :M 4.1.11 Addition & Subtraction with Fractions
The teacher forms groups of 4-5 students and distributes cards with fractions (denominators 1-10) and + and - symbols to each group, along with answer cards. The goal is to open a treasure box by collecting keys. Groups earn keys by showing different ways to represent a fraction written on the board. Each unique way earns a key.
For example, for 5/6:
2/6 + 3/6
1/6 + 1/6 + 1/6 + 1/6 + 1/6
6/6 - 1/6
Students have 2 minutes to write their answers on the answer cards and lift them in the air. They explain their methods, and the correct explanations earn keys. The teacher ensures there is no confusion and keeps track of time. This process is repeated with fractions like 4/6, 2/7, and 3/5.
At the end of the activity, the group with the most keys opens the treasure box and shares the surprise with the class. The teacher concludes by asking students what they learned, emphasizing the understanding that different methods can lead to the same result.
Name of Activity/Game: Comparing Unit Fractions
An A-4 sheet of paper is used when teaching fractions to students. First of all, the teacher is informed to create the concepts of whole, half and quarter on this paper. Students divide the paper into whole, half and quarter depending on this information. Afterwards, 1/8 notation is added. Students observe the division of fractions on the same sheet of paper. In this way, students understand how many halves, quarters and 1/8 fractions there can be in a whole, and then students can list these fractions in terms of size and size.
On another sheet of paper, students are asked to create fractions of 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, 1/6, 1/7, 1/8 on the same sheets of paper, all the same. That is, students divide the same papers into 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 respectively. In this way, students are enabled to learn about comparing unit fractions in a more concrete process.

5.Cyberchase (PBS)
It is an animated series broadcast by PBS Kids that aims to teach children math and problem-solving skills.
Activity 1 : Students can be shown division through a piece of paper. It is important for students to learn this subject, which is one of the basic topics of fractions, by experiencing it. It is a good way to teach students the concept of half.
Sharing among students will be effective in improving their ability to understand fractions. The teacher first observes the students by asking them to share among themselves. Students try to share in their own ways. When they have difficulty, the teacher explains them with the simplest methods.
