Richard Cory is dramatic poem written by Edwin Arlington Robinson, who have written so many poems using his personal experiences. The poem is written according to the 1st person point of view and it is quatrain form consisted of ABAB rhyming scheme. Edwin creatively describes the brief nature of happiness which is focused on money.
Whenever Richard Cory went downtown,
WE people on the pavement looked at him,
He was a gentleman from sole to crown,
Clean favored and imperially slim.
In the first stanza , Richard Cory is described as an idol person. 'We people on the pavement ' implies that the poor people and onlookers on the pavement. People look at him as they are looking at a celebrity or a king. The respect and recognition existed among people for Richard Cory can be described through the line ' he was a gentleman from sole to crown'. People generously gave the title ' gentleman' to Richard Cory because his depicted array and elegance of his outfit as well as his heart. Poet also describes the features of Richard Cory in the line 4, ' clean favored and impartially slim'.
And he was always quietly arrayed,
And he was always human when he talked;
But still he fluttered pulses when he said,
' Good morning' and he glittered when he walked.
The features of Richard Cory which are subjected to the prospect of people are described in stanza 3. People felt meeting Cory as a triumphant shiver because of the divine tempers expressed through his words and behavior. Poet says that he was get excited he had in the presence of the people who praised him. However due to Richard Cory's manly nature , he was was well recognized y everyone he associated.
And he was rich - yes, richer than a king
And admirably schooled in every grace.
In fine, we thought that he was everything
To make us with that we were in his place.
Through the next stanza, poet describes social status more. The expression ' richer than a king' implies that unlike others who have a lot of money he had a great humanity. He is a person who have explored humanity, generosity courtesy and greatness. The third line of the third stanza portrays reader's changed intention about Richard Cory. "We though he was everything ' implies that people in the street had exaggerated intentions about Richard Cory and actually ere cannot be seen such a glory in Cory's life.
So on we worked, and waited for the light,
And went without the meat, and cursed the bread;
And Richard Cory, one calm summer night,
Went home and put a bullet through his head.
The last stanza of the poem describes the intentions of the townspeople who have athirst for a life like Richard Cory. "Waited for the light" implies the way they longed a comfortable life they noticed from the richer society. Next line of the poem implies how hard was the intention of getting rich and glorious , affected on people. They went without meat and cursed bread because their extreme poverty has driven them to stay in starve. While the people , who appreciated and followed Richard Cory in bottom of their hearts, were suffering transformation of Cory's life has taken place. He committed suicide himself with a bullet on a summer night. No one became aware of the reason for his death. Sometimes , he may be suffered due to the poverty of the people who appreciate him or sometime it can be due to his mental turmoil or collapse of his mental status. There cannot be seen a proper reason which sits the death for a kind hearted gentleman like Richard Cory but however , he has put a full stop for his repenting life.
