Resources

For undergraduate students who are interested in graduate school in mathematics, here are a few resources that might be helpful.

GRE Requirements

The general and mathematics subject GRE produce another barrier for students who wish to pursue graduate school. They not only cost time and money to take, but they are often not representative of a student's success in graduate school. This spreadsheet contains information about the GRE requirements for math PhD programs in the US and Canada. Personally, I was only able to apply to programs that did not require the GRE, and this spreadsheet was a useful tool. It was started by Emily Winn-Nuñez, and is currently managed by myself and Lee Trent. It has not yet been updated for the 2024-25 application cycle.

DRP

The Directed Reading Program at the University of Minnesota (and also at many other schools) offers undergraduate student the opportunity to read mathematical works that interest them under the guidance of a graduate student. These projects are self motivated, and allow exploration in areas that might not be covered in coursework. DRP projects at the University of Minnesota conclude with a presentation on the work that was covered. For more information and ideas for topics, please consult the website linked above.

OURFA2M2

OURFA2M2 is a conference for undergraduate students interested in mathematics. It gives students an insight into what being a mathematician entails, as well as surveying research areas, and helping students make connections. Find out more at their website. In addition to their conference, they host a variety of workshops throughout the year to help young mathematicians gain skills that will help them in their mathematical journey.
