TSI Information

What is the TSI?

The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a placement exam, not a pass-fail test. It was created for all college entering students. It assesses for college readiness in reading, writing, and math. However there are some who can be exempt from taking it.

Who is exempt?

  • Those with a composite score of 23 or higher on the ACT, with at least a 19 on the reading section and a 19 on the math section

  • Those with a minimum score of 530 on the math section and minimum of 480 evidence-based reading and writing on the SAT

  • If you score at least a 4000 on the English III STAAR and/or the Algebra II STAAR

  • Transfer from another institution in which you've completed college coursework, with that institution's approval. This includes dual credit.

*it is possible to be exempt from certain areas and not others

What are the minimum passing scores on the TSI?

  • A score of at least a 950 on math

    • If score falls below a 950, students need 6 or higher on the diagnostic test

  • A score of at least a 945 on ELAR and 5 on WritePlacer

Where can I take the TSI?

The TSI is offered online, at your local community college, and at your high school. (Ask your counselor for more information!) This is the most current TCC information on the TSI.

Can I retake the TSI?

Yes, you can take the TSI as many times as you want. We recommend setting up some extra study time when retaking it to ensure you get the scores you want.
