Place Value Chart

4.NO.NBT.4 Add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers to the one millions place using strategies, including the algorithm.

In previous grades you may have used base 10 pieces to add/subtract; however, as move more towards the abstract, we now use a place value chart instead.  

Let’s investigate how to use the Place Value Chart as a strategy for addition and subtraction. 

• Investigation 1 - a reminder of how we used base ten blocks.

• Investigation 2 - move away from base ten blocks and replacing them with tally mark in the appropriate column with addition.

• Investigation 3- move away from base ten blocks and replacing them with tally mark in the appropriate column with subtraction.

• Investigation 4 - using expanded form to add as a strategy.

As we move away from the concrete models and more towards abstract, we will begin using discs within our place value chart as learners begin to become more familiar with place value.

• Former NDSU quarterback Carson Wentz passed 13,981 yards combined between his time as NDSU quarterback and as NFL quarterback for the Eagles.  He earned 5115 passing yards during his 4 years at NDSU.  How many passing yards does he have as an NFL quarterback for the Eagles?

• A bakery used 12,674 kg of flour.  Of that, 2,802 kg was whole wheat and 888 kg was rice flour.  The rest was all-purpose flour.  How much all-purpose flour did they use?

• Create your own authentic word problem to add a number that is greater than 10,000 and a number that is greater than 150,000.

• Create your own authentic word problem to subtract a number that is greater than 285,000 from number that is just less than 960,000.
