Coin Collection
ND State Standard
1.GM.M.5 Count collections of coins (pennies, nickels, and dimes) relating to counting patterns by 1s, 5s, 10s up to one dolloar.
This standard includes a mixture of coins (pennies, nickels, and dimes) up to one dollar. Students may start by counting one coin up to one dollar but are expected to apply their counting patterns of 1s, 5s, and 10s.
You goal is to build as few coin collections as possible to satisfy each constraint at least once. Use money pieces from our manipulative master list or real coins to show your work and insert screen shots or photos. Â
Model each number with coins to make your thinking visual.
The total worth is exactly $1.00
The collection contains exactly one quarter
The collection contains more than 5 total coins
The collection uses three different types of coins
The collection contains more dimes than nickels
All the coins in the collection are the same type
All coins in the collection are a different type
Within each number chosen for the constraint make sure to include:
Describe how and why you built each coin collection.
Identify which coin collection satisfy which constraints.
Answer the following:
Which constraints pair nicely?
Which constraints cannot be paired?
Is it possible to solve using only 2, 3, or 4 coin collections?
