Get to Know Your Friends
ND State Standard
1.DPS.D.1 Collect, organize, and represent data with up to three categories using picture and bar graphs.
1.DPS.D.2 Analyze data by answering descriptive questions.
Ask and answer questions about the total number of data points, how many in each category, and how many more or less are in one category than in another.
You will collect, organize, and analyze data through a survey, create visual representations of the data, and interpret findings using appropriate mathematical language.
Develop a Survey Question: Think of a question you would like to ask your friends. The question should have three possible answer choices. For example:
What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
Chocolate, Vanilla, or Strawberry.
Conduct a Survey: Ask at least 20 friends your question and record their responses. Organize your data in a table.
Reflection: Consider the types of questions you chose. How did you select your answer choices? What challenges did you encounter when collecting data?
Create a Visual Representation: Design a picture graph (or this example) to display your data. Use clear and engaging visuals to represent the information.
Reflection: How did you decide which visual representation to use? What features of your graph make it effective in communicating the data?
Analyze and Interpret Data: Write ten questions that a first-grade student could answer based on your data. Use appropriate mathematical vocabulary (e.g., more, less, most, least, total, difference). Provide complete sentence answers to your questions.
Reflection: How did you choose the questions you asked? What challenges did you encounter when explaining the data to a first-grade level? How did creating the graph help you analyze the data?
Reflection: Once you have completed the project, reflect on the following along with the reflection questions at each step above:
How did this project deepen your understanding of data collection and analysis?
What did you learn about creating clear and informative graphs?
How can you apply these skills to your future teaching practice?
What challenges did you encounter, and how did you overcome them?
