EDU 122: Using Technology to Support Learning

General Information
EDU 122 is part of the teacher education program offered by the School of Education at Bishop's University in Sherbrooke, Quebec.
Official Course Description: This course will focus on using technology to support teaching and learning processes. By studying the foundations of educational technology, pre-service teachers will develop an understanding of the role of technologies can play to improve education. They will explore the role of the educator in technology-facilitated learning environments. They will build skills in designing technology-based learning environments to support meaningful learning.
The class is designed to:
help practicing and future teachers integrate technology in their daily teaching practices.
it is a practical, hands-on course that is grounded in constructivist learning theory.
the students will learn by engaging in authentic tasks in a project-based learning environment.
Along with the ISTE student (2016) and teacher (2017) standards the focus from 2020 onwards will be on the NEW Quebec's Digital Action Plan for Education and Higher Education

Typical Class Breakdown
Typical weekly schedule:
8:30 - 9:00: Observations from previous class; introduction of weekly theme & hands-on activities
9:00 - 10:00: Group discussion and reflections on readings; Main topic for the week
10:00- 10:15: Health Break
10:30 to 11:20: Hands-on activities; lab & wrap-up. Class dismissed at 11:20!
Required Course Readings (revised for Fall '23)
The chapter readings will be accessed through Perusall. I will explain in the first class.
The Maloy text (used previously) comes with an online wiki https://sites.google.com/view/transformlearningwithtech. I may reference this resource sometimes throughout the semester
The Quebec Digital Action Plan: Guide & Overview. I will refer to this throughout the semester as well
We are also using Stacey Roshan's "Tech With Heart: Leveraging Technology to Empower Student Voice, Ease Anxiety, and Creating Compassionate Classrooms. I have also uploaded the text on Perusall.
