5a - Design professional learning based on needs assessments and frameworks for working with adults to support their cultural, social-emotional and learning needs.
5b - Build the capacity of educators, leaders and instructional teams to put the ISTE Standards into practice by facilitating active learning and providing meaningful feedback.
5c - Evaluate the impact of professional learning and continually make improvements in order to meet the schoolwide vision for using technology for high-impact teaching and learning.
ARTIFACT DESCRIPTION
This artifact is a curriculum plan that I created in order to administer a year long series of professional development trainings based on ISTE standards. I have outlined a series of professional development sessions that are designed to enhance teachers’ pedagogy and instructional design skills within the realm of educational technology.
IMPLEMENTATION
The implementation of this plan started with a needs analysis of my school. By surveying my fellow teachers and administrators, I was able to focus my curriculum plan on areas of need. Many of the sessions are focused on how to effectively engage students during distance learning. Each training is meant to give hands-on experience with the educational technology being presented, while also providing actionable strategies to improve pedagogy. While the training is planned out for a full year, the implementation may change based on the feedback and reflection that is built into each module and the changing needs of the school.
IMPACT
The impact of this curriculum plan has not yet been fully realized. However, I have had the opportunity to complete two AMA “Ask Me Anything” open forum sessions to help my colleagues with tech related issues. Based on the feedback from those sessions I have also conducted a training of the use of Calendly, an application that allows students to self schedule tutoring sessions with their teachers. The feedback from these sessions has been overwhelmingly positive and is a good indication that the curriculum plan and its needs analysis are on point. My plan facilitates active learning and promotes ISTE standards in professional development. This combined with meaningful feedback and collaboration it has fostered make it the perfect artifact to demonstrate my competence with standard 5a.
ARTIFACT DESCRIPTION
The artifacts I have chosen represent standard 5c are both from a professional development series I began to help my colleagues during distance education. The sessions are known as AMAs or “ask me anything” sessions. These AMA are meant to be a judgement-free open forum where teachers can get help with any issues they are encountering related to educational technology. These sessions were conducted on a weekly basis and teachers were given the opportunity to provide feedback and request additional assistance. These artifacts shown are my opening presentation slide as well as an example of the feedback I received after the professional development.
IMPLEMENTATION
These AMA sessions were implemented on a weekly basis during the time when teachers were forced to switch to remote learning due to the covid-19 pandemic. As a tech leader at my school I took on the role of mentor to my colleagues who have less experience with educational technology. These sessions were an open forum where teachers could ask questions via video conference or they could add questions to a private padlet if they wanted to remain anonymous. These sessions continued for approximately five weeks due to their popularity and the need for sustained professional development. Each session I would evaluate the feedback from my colleagues and reflect on how to improve. This feedback and reflection helped me to evaluate the impact of professional learning and allowed me to continually make improvements in order to improve my own pedagogy. This is the goal of standard 5c and it is why I chose this artifact to represent my proficiency with the standard.
IMPACT
The impact of these AMA sessions was felt immediately. Teachers had an open forum to have their questions answered quickly and efficiently so that they could use new educational technologies for high impact teaching while working remotely (5c). The feedback from teachers was overwhelmingly positive. In fact, many teachers attended the AMA sessions week after week even when they did not have specific questions just to learn “best practices.” As many as 30 teachers voluntarily attended these sessions each week. Based on their feedback I was able to hone in on areas of need and I was able to improve my capacity to lead professional development. Furthermore, I was able to create supplemental professional development trainings in areas of need based on the feedback I received from my colleagues (5c).
My Curriculum Plan and the AMA “ask me anything” sessions included in the curriculum plan have had a positive and immediate impact on the use of educational technology for teaching and learning at my school. These artifacts have increased the capacity of the teachers at my school to meaningfully teach based on the ISTE standards. These trainings we're also tailored to the specific needs of my colleagues and were based on their meaningful feedback. For these reasons, I believe I have demonstrated proficiency with both standards 5b and 5c.
However, I am still working towards proficiency with standard 5a. Standard 5a is it about supporting adults with their cultural and social emotional learning needs. As of now, this is not my area of expertise. However I am attending Professional development from the WRITE Institute of San Diego. These training sessions are designed to help teachers promote equity in the classrooms and schools. It is my hope that these sessions will provide me with the background needed to become proficient with standard 5a in the future.
