Before beginning pointe work, students must demonstrate strong foundational technique, strength, balance, and body awareness. Dancing en pointe is a privilege that requires both physical readiness and consistent dedication. Below is what teachers look for when evaluating students for pointe readiness. Pointe approval is based on the teacher’s evaluation of each dancer’s strength, control, alignment, and maturity. Every dancer develops at their own pace—pointe readiness is a sign of consistent effort and safe technique, not age or time in class.
Students should show:
Proper alignment through the big toe when fully pointed
No sickling (ankles rolling in or out)
Strong, well-developed arches
Toes that remain flat and aligned (no curling or overlapping)
Clean and well-stretched feet in tendu and while pointing
Goal: A strong, well-aligned foot that can safely support weight on pointe.
Students should be able to:
Distribute weight evenly across the toes
Rise to relevé with straight ankles and full control
Maintain strong core engagement and stable posture
Show length and stretch through the legs
Demonstrate balance and control in positions such as retiré and sous-sus
Goal: Steady, controlled movement that shows the strength and stability needed for pointe work.
Students should demonstrate:
Consistent turnout and rotation from the hips
Strong, straight supporting legs
Engaged core and relaxed, neutral shoulders
High, stable relevés with controlled movement
Coordinated arms and clear spotting
Clean single turns (pirouettes, piqué, and soutenu) on both sides
Goal: Confident, well-balanced turns that reflect control and alignment.
Students should be able to:
Maintain turnout and ankle alignment while rising through the foot
Show strength and stability through the calves and ankles
Keep the shoulders relaxed without pressing into the barre
Move smoothly and evenly on both sides of the body
Goal: Strong, supportive legs and ankles ready for the demands of pointe work.
Students should consistently:
Maintain correct posture and alignment of the pelvis, spine, and upper body
Stay attentive, focused, and disciplined in class
Demonstrate respect, maturity, and a positive attitude toward teachers and peers
Goal: A dancer who shows professionalism, body awareness, and readiness for the responsibility of pointe training.
