Understand the factors that influence student motivation and how instructors can interact with students in ways that help to motivate them to more fully engage in online and blended learning activities.
It's difficult to overestimate how important motivation is to the learning process. In this week's module we will focus on the causes of student motivation and ways that we can interact with students to increase their motivation.
In the course, I try to model different ways to deliver online instruction. In this module we will experience what it's like to learn using a tool called VoiceThread.
Before participating in this week's VoiceThread, you need to read or listen to the following:
Read Motivation Theories and Instructional Design by Seung Won Park
Read Maintaining Students’ Motivation for Learning as the Year Goes On by Judy Willis
Listen to TED Radio Hour's Maslow's Human Needs
For this lesson, we will be using VoiceThread. VoiceThread is a tool that allows you to create a presentation with slides and videos that you and others can comment on using text, audio, and video. Your school district may have a district-wide account. Even if you have a district account, you may need to create a personal VoiceThread account so that you can comment on this VoiceThread that was created using my personal account.
You can create an account using the following link: http://voicethread.com/register/
This account should be FREE. If it asks for payment you are in the wrong place.
On a side note, the free account allows you to create 20 VoiceThreads.
Once you have an account you will be able to post comments. The following video will show you how to view and make video and audio comments to the VoiceThread: https://go.screenpal.com/watch/cZ6wIqncuMZ
Once you have an account, you are ready to participate in the VoiceThread below. You can access the VoiceThread using the following link: https://voicethread.com/myvoice/thread/29302795
In total, you will be posting 15 short comments to the VoiceThread. That's about half of the total slides. I've numbered the slides with the question icon below.
One advantage of a direct instructional activity using VoiceThread is that you can speed up the lecture. To select the speed, you click the number located near the bottom left of the screen.
There is nothing that needs to be submitted this week. I will watch the VoiceThread comments that you posted and award you points within the Blackboard grade book.
