A famous fiddler once said that one cannot learn traditional music from the page but that one needs to catch it by contagion!!

There is a lot of truth in this but in compiling our sheet music collection we have tried our best to put in bowings appropriate to the tradition. It is unlikely that any two Shetland fiddlers would play any tune exactly the same way or that any fiddler would play the tune twice the same way and this needs to be borne in mind when trying to learn this music. 

This list of sheet music for most of our repertoire was compiled from many sources over many happy Friday mornings in 2023 by Terry Moug and Donald Gorman. Most of the sources had no bowings supplied on the music so we have added them when it seemed to be helpful. Later in the site development we added other sets and tunes which are not in our repertoire. The arrangements reflect how we play the tunes and are mainly aimed at musicians who have not played this type of music before.

We would recommend that anyone wishing to play Shetland tunes authentically needs to go to Shetland and play tunes in the sessions with the locals, go on a course  or listen to a lot of Shetland music!!!
