Gavin was recognized for their advocacy work for the Pennsylvania Student Teacher Support program and their work to help other states also gain programs that pay their student teachers.
Gavin has lobbied at the State Capitol in Harrisburg, PA, advocated at many PSEA Houses of Delegates and the 2024 NEA Representative Assemblies, pioneered as one of the founding members of the NW Region Ed Justice Committee, and marched with APSCUF for quality education with the current threats to public education and higher education.

This award will be presented to a student who has demonstrated a commitment to justice and/or has been an activist trying to create positive change for the campus, the Edinboro community, and/or the world. The individual should have strong leadership skills, passion, and dedication to a particular issue or collection of issues.

PennWest Edinboro member and leader, Gavin Mitsdarfer took part in two Advocate for Children and Education events at the State Capitol. Gavin stood in support of Student PSEA members speaking about the importance on the stipend and school counselors advocating for the School Counselor's Bill of Rights. Gavin also met with the offices of then Representative Patty Kim and Senator Greg Rothman to discuss the importance of a fully funded student teacher stipend program and the negatives of school voucher systems.

Gavin Mitsdarfer took even more time to team up with NEA members across the nation to write to fellow NEA memebrs in swing states across the nation to remind them to not only vote in the 2024 General Election, but also to vote for pro-public education candidates up and down the ballot.

PennWest Edinboro Student PSEA invited Matt Edgell from the Northwestern Region PSEA Office to talk about the importance of PACE and pro-public education candidates being elected to office. He informed our members about the process of PSEA/NEA in determining if a candidate is pro-public education.

PennWest Edinboro leaders pushed out an Election Day reminder to go out and vote in the 2024 General Election. The post also included a link to School House Ballot so that members across the region could find the pro-public education candidates on their own ballots.

Local President, Gavin Mitsdarfer, not only became one of the founding members of the Northwestern Region Ed Justice Committee, but they also took part in the Take Back the Power event on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Innauguration Day.

After a meeting with NEA Leaders about the impacts of the second Trump administration, PACE Chair Ethan Rapp and President Gavin Mitsdarfer discussed the implications of the actions by the new administration along with the new proposed budget for the Student Teacher Support Program.

Following the attempts to cut funding for higher education and the closure of the federal Department of Education, PennWest Edinboro APSCUF held a Honk for Higher Education March around the PennWest Edinboro campus; Local President, Gavin Mitsdarfer, joined the march and spoke about the importance of union solidarity in a time when education, especially public education, is under attack.
