The National Institute of Marine Science and Technology (INSTM) celebrated its centenary on July 12, 2024, with an event recognizing the vital contributions of its researchers. The celebration, held at INSTM’s headquarters in Carthage Salammbô, was attended by the Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources, and Fisheries, Abdelmonem Belati, and the Minister of Environment, Leila Chikhaoui.
Minister Belati praised the institute's groundbreaking research, particularly in aiding fishermen to tackle challenges like the blue crab, which has now become a valuable commodity both domestically and internationally. He emphasized the critical role of agricultural scientific research in advancing the sector.
Minister Chikhaoui highlighted the necessity of implementing scientific research to combat climate change and coastal issues. She called for collaboration among the private sector, associations, citizens, and media to underscore the importance of environmental and marine conservation.
A rich celebration program paid tribute to former members of the INSTM and all those who have contributed to its success both nationally and internationally.
The day was highlighted by testimonies emphasizing the impact of scientific research on the economic and social fabric, as well as on marine environmental conservation.
An exhibition showcased the activities of the institute and its partners.
National and international partners also gave presentations, followed by a roundtable discussion on the development of research laboratories since their inception.
