What is the Pathways Intern Program?
At JSC, you'll have the opportunity to contribute to our continued work of building a new NASA vehicle to enable human deep space exploration, work on the operation and development of the International Space Station in cooperation with our Internal Partners, and work with industry to help foster the commercial space sector.
Our Pathways Intern Program follows a cooperative education model where current undergraduate and graduate students gain valuable work experience on an alternating school/work basis, and serves as a pipeline for our future full-time employees. Interns receive the same benefits as full-time employees such as bi-weekly pay, insurance, and paid time-off.
Each work tour you will rotate into a different functional area at JSC, which allows you to try out different career paths while you are still in school and decide what you want to do after graduation. Each time you come for a work tour you'll be assigned a mentor who will work side-by-side with you to assign you a meaningful project and provide the tools/knowledge to complete it.

The Wright Brothers Institute (WBI) is working with the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) to sponsor the second year of the Student Challenge/Showcase titled “Beyond 5G Challenge.”
The first challenge culminated in an expense paid invitation to the students and their professors to present the result of their investigation in Dayton Ohio. The students were provided hardware kits that they could use to learn and investigate Software Defined Radio/Software Defined Network (SDR/SDN) concepts of interest to the Air Force. Each team was able to set up their system and demonstrate what they had accomplished to the other teams and AFRL SMEs. The purpose of this program is to provide students with the opportunity to work on projects with the Air Force Research Laboratory, learn more about AFRL technical needs, develop their skills in this area of interest to AFRL, and to connect AFRL personnel and students for potential future opportunities in employment and research.
Based on what we learned from the first year, we reached out to the professors of the 8 participating universities and six other professors that thought they would be interested in participating in a 2019-2020 school year challenge. All but one of the interviewees thought that a tournament style competition would be better than doing a research project competition for undergraduate students. It was also learned that we needed to provide lessons/learning tools for the students to increase their skills. We are teamed with National Instruments to help facilitate this for the next challenge. We plan on holding a competition/showcase event where the students can use the kits to improve their skills, then compete (for prizes) in one or two categories during the culminating event with the AFRL. For teams that would like to work on aspects of SDR/SDN that are not part of the competition they would be invited to showcase their work. These will be judged by the AFRL team for best presentation or best innovative use of the systems.
We would like to know if you are interested in building a team that would like to participate in the challenge. We would be looking for proposals on what could be done and when you would be forming your teams so we could select the teams that would be given the needed SDR/SDN kits. Attachment 1 is a list of the equipment we provided last year. The AFRL team will come to visit each team sometime during the year and help mentor these teams along. We hope to have the final challenges complete by mid july 2019 and sent out to interested professors/teams. We will be accepting the project submissions from 15 Aug -30 Sep 2019 so that teams can be formed early in the school year. We hope that this challenge will reinforce your teaching by providing a solid example to work on and provide an excellent venue for your students to get a paid trip to see what other teams can do across the country. If interested, please email me at bob.lee@wbi-innovates.com. We will then keep you informed about the challenge specifics and help that will be provided to the students. We also would like any suggestions on a specific challenge that you think would be motivational for the students.

Exploring solutions in the mission critical industry
A project demonstrating electrical or mechanical systems innovation for
1. Data center and facilities operations industry
2. Enterprise information and communications technology (ICT) facilities
The project presentation should entail the research, design, product development and execution of a potentially disruptive electrical, mechanical, communications, or information technology with specific focus on applicability for commercial enterprises, rather than residential or consumer facilities.
The presentations should demonstrate how the technology would benefit the industry by improving operational systems and controls, enhancing facility environmental management, developing or applying analytics to optimize facility performance, or in reducing greenhouse gas emissions when compared with normal data center or facility operations.
