Upon being discharged from Ravenscar Asylum, Constantine was approached by a figure from his past, the sorceress Zatanna, who offered him a new chance to use his mystical knowledge for good.
She stated that the two of them should unite to discover the whereabouts of their former lover, the sorcerer Nick Necro.
Together, they went to the wizard's old mansion in New York, which was now being used as a sanctuary by cultists. The duo of magicians banished them from the place and ended up discovering that they had been sent there by the alchemist Felix Faust, who certainly knew of Nick Necro's absence and that his fortress would be unprotected. Constantine located Doctor Mist, an old ally of Faust, who revealed that the magician had taken the temple of Nanda Parbat in the Himalayas, where he had been isolated for months.
By invading the ancient temple, they found Nick being used as an eternal battery by Felix Faust, who was using his soul to wander through the spiritual world in search of the Book of Magic. Upon breaking their connection, Nick did not survive, and Felix explained that he needed the Tome to protect the world from the approaching Darkness. But Constantine exiled the magician to hell before he could explain himself. Upon touching the book, Zatanna was also touched by the Darkness, which pointed out to her the rest of the warriors capable of preventing the end of reality.
The first person pointed out by the vision was Donna Troy, a representative of the multiverse who defied the laws of existence. Now a mystical vigilante seeking the truth about her nebulous origin, she joined the team after they promised to be able to prevent the Fates from continuing to pursue her, since the witches believed that the young woman was an affront to the laws of life and death. Before Donna could say goodbye to her mortal boyfriend, Terry Long, his body was invaded by a spectral figure who introduced himself as Deadman. He claimed to be a messenger from the afterlife sent to help the team, and even if they couldn't see him, he would accompany them, manifesting when necessary.
The four of them then went to Death Valley, the hottest desert in the world, in search of the demonologist and archaeologist Jason Blood, in order to convince him to make peace with the demon Etrigan, the infernal counterpart who inhabited his body. But the meeting was interrupted by Doctor Mist and his cultists, who had discovered that the group had taken possession of the Books of Magic. Jason was forced to summon Etrigan to contain the infernal spell invoked by the sorcerer and found himself forced to help the team so that a powerful artifact like the Books of Magic would not fall into the wrong hands.
Finally, the team reunited in the Slaughter Swamp, where the last chosen one manifested already knowing where he needed to act on the plane. The Swamp Thing guided them to begin a ritual where each of them represented a unique facet of magic's manifestations in relation to human beings. When the Darkness finally approached, the union between the six was able to create a direct line of communication with it, allowing the Swamp Thing to be the mediator in the final discussion between the Darkness and the Green.
Seeing themselves as both manifestations of the universe that had undergone similar experiences, the Darkness finally agreed to fade away. Thus, the Justice League Dark ended the greatest war humanity has ever known, and there is not a single soul capable of thanking them for it. Zatanna believes that this manifestation was a piece of destiny to group those individuals together, and everyone agrees that for the good of humanity, it is best for the Justice League Dark to stay together.
