John Constantine, known as the Hellblazer, is a cunning and morally complex occult detective, magician, and conman from England. A master of the dark arts with a troubled past, Constantine has been both a savior and a source of chaos in the magical world. His life is marked by deep guilt over past mistakes—especially the loss of the young girl Astra—which drives his relentless fight against supernatural threats. Recently, after leaving Ravenscar Asylum, he found new purpose under Zatanna Zatara’s leadership in the Dark League, defending humanity from the darkest magical forces.
As a child, Constantine made a devastating choice—sacrificing his parents to an eternal fire through a pact fueled by ignorance. This act bound him to the occult world and set him on the path to becoming the Hellblazer.
In his teenage years, Constantine was arrested during youth protests as an anarchist and met much older police contacts who helped secure his release. In juvenile detention, he befriended Veronica Delacroix and Gaz Lester after they were arrested for breaking into a mausoleum. Together, they formed the punk-occult band Mucous Membrane, touring with the aim of weakening the veil between reality and the paranormal through their ritualistic performances. Their journey ended when Veronica died attempting to transcend her physical form.
After the collapse of the band, Constantine met Nick Necro, a young magician, in New York. They shared magical teachings and a romantic relationship until Nick betrayed him, introducing Zatanna Zatara as merely a casual fling. Constantine and Zatanna briefly joined forces in the search for the Books of Magic, but when Nick’s betrayal was revealed, Constantine left, kissing Nick goodbye and spitting on Zatanna.
Returning to England, Constantine applied his knowledge of demonology while traveling with companions Marj and Mercury. He delved deeper into the occult, often abusing drugs during his travels.
One night, after snorting cocaine laced with a pentagram, Constantine attempted an ambitious summoning ritual meant to banish a particularly vicious supernatural entity plaguing the local area. However, the ritual went catastrophically wrong. Instead of controlling the situation, Constantine accidentally called forth a far more powerful demon.
The demon’s appearance turned the scene into chaos. Among those present was Astra, a young girl caught in the crossfire. The demon took hold of her, dragging her screaming toward the depths of Hell. Constantine tried to improvise a banishment on the spot, but the magical backlash was overwhelming—his preparations had been flawed, his judgment clouded, and his will outmatched. The demon vanished with Astra, leaving nothing behind.
What made the incident unbearable was that Astra’s damnation was avoidable. Constantine had summoned the wrong entity through arrogance and intoxication, and in doing so, sealed her fate. He later learned the demon was powerful enough that it could not be summoned twice by the same magician—meaning Astra’s rescue would forever be out of his hands.
Haunted by guilt over Astra, Constantine voluntarily committed himself to Ravenscar Asylum. Three months after leaving, Zatanna found him and offered him a new path: to use his occult skills for good. Together, they helped form the Dark League after stopping a major threat known as the Darkness, securing an agreement with the Green and establishing a front line of magical defense for humanity.
