EAALC: Purpose, Goals and Organization

East Asian Academic Librarians of California (EAALC) is a consortium consisting of librarians from the University of California campuses, Claremont Colleges, Stanford University and the University of Southern California who are responsible for developing and managing collections in the East Asian field.

Purpose

The purpose of the consortium is to collaborate and coordinate efforts in acquiring and providing access to East Asian library resources. Continued growth in publishing, changing patterns and increased demands in library usage, coupled with budgetary issues and problems make library cooperation not only practical, but also critical in adequately meeting the information and research needs for present and future generations of scholars.

Goals

1. To identify and develop strategies to collect, acquire, provide access to, and preserve important research resources.

2. To develop and coordinate formal collection development agreements in order to maintain or enhance the collective collections, based on programmatic needs and strengths of individual campuses.

3. To identify appropriate electronic resources for joint acquisition and promote access to them.

4. To develop and submit Mini-SCAP and other proposals, and to coordinate them with formal agreements of the consortium whenever possible.

5. To collaborate to obtain extra-institutional grant funds, whenever appropriate, to support consortium goals.

6. To coordinate initiatives, projects, and activities in collaboration with other regional, national, and international East Asian institutions and organizations, to the extent possible.

Organization

1. All librarians for East Asian Studies at UC, Claremont, Stanford, and USC are members of the consortium with a designated contact person from each campus/institution.

2. The consortium may form special task forces and work groups as needed. For instance, an East Asian Digital Library Group (EADLG) was created to deal with the electronic resources exclusively. Cathy Chiu of UCSB chairs that group and serves as liaison to the Joint Steering Committee on Shared Collections (JSC) of the California Digital Library (CDL). Other members of the group represent the various language/subject areas.

3. The consortium elects a convennor who calls for the annual meeting which normally takes place in early Fall. The convener is the contact person with the UC system wide collections organization, the Collection Development Committee (CDC). For more information, contact Bill Wong of UCI.
