Route
The Molise section of the E/1 trail starts from SCAPOLI, a small village, World Bagpipe Capital, located at the foot of the Mainarde mountains, in the province of Isernia. The first part of the trail runs in a high hilly environment, crossing the Volturno river and passing through medieval villages such as Montaquila, Monteroduni and Colli a Volturno, to reach the two lakes of Gallo and Letino (1.050 m a.s.l.), named after the two villages of the same name (these two localities are located in the Province of Caserta - Campania).
Here begins the crossing of the Matese Regional Park mountain range, where the stages are more challenging, reaching altitudes between 1,400 and 2,050 metres above sea level at Monte Miletto, which dominates Lake Matese and the Campitello Matese ski resort. We cross plateaus and beech forests where herds of cows and horses graze in the wild, interspersed with rocky spires and narrow valleys.
At Campitello Matese (1450 m a.s.l.), we change province and enter the province of Campobasso to cross the territories of the municipalities of San Massimo, Roccamandolfi, S. Polomatese, Campochiaro and Guardiaregia
The last stage of the Matese reaches Bocca della Selva (1395 metres above sea level), a tourist resort in the municipality of Cusano Mutri, in the province of Benevento. From here the E11 passes into Campania)

Travel
The E1 in Molise runs in the first part close to the Apennine chain and in the second part on the Apennine ridge with two stages and a somewhat challenging link road. The starting and finishing points can be reached by public transport
Gear
The first three stages of the E1 Molise Trail traverse a medium/high hill environment with oak and ilex groves, chestnut and beech forests, alternating with plateaus where flocks of sheep and cows and cultivated fields meet. The second three, on the other hand, deal with the Apennine section crossing the Matese Regional Park, with its highest peak (Monte Miletto 2050 m a.s.l.), which can be reached by an EE variant, optional with an easier official stage for average hikers. In any case, all stages require a minimum of training and hiking practice.
