There is no progress without countering the problems. Dr. Sheetal K. has successfully overcome the great amounts of difficulties to establish a progressive platform for the transgender community’s welfare in the form of Sahodaran Community Oriented Health Development (SCOHD Society). The community based organization was established in the year 1998.

With the help of SCOHD Society and an earnest effort of Dr. Sheethal, initiated six self-help groups (SHGs) for the community people was started with the support of Bharathiyar Gramin Bank in the year 2007. When the community people asked about the loan process neither the Bank management has shown any courtesy or sensitivity to offer any support nor had given any amount of loan because of their inferior social status.

After receiving an unfavorable response from the bank, Dr. Sheethal has approached various Government departments, companies and organizations for the monetary support to uplift the community, but she faced consistent failures.

Finally, in the month of October 2019, the committee of District Rural Development Agency, (DRDA), Ministry of Rural Development Government of Pondicherry, had approached her. During their primary discussion, with the constant support of Dr. Sheethal they have convinced to get the approval to start the SHGs for the Community.

On November 27, 2019, 2nd meeting organized at the Kakkayantoppu Panchayat Level Office, Ariyankuppam Block,Puducherry. Mr. D. Mohan Kumar, Project Director - cum - Additional Mission Director, Mrs. P. Ragini, Block Development Officer - cum - Joint Mission Director, Mrs. Uma Gurumurthy, District Deputy Manager, NABARD, Puducherry, Mr. R. Kathirvelu, Joint Block Development, Ariyankuppam Block, DRDA, Mr. R. Cartigayane, Extension Officer, Ariyankuppam Block, Mr. A. Arumugam, Sevak, Ariyankuppam Block, Mr. K. Dhanasekaran, Block MKSP Coordinator, Mrs. P. Savithri, Gender Coordinator, DRDA and Dr. Sheethal had participated in the meeting. The dignitaries explained that once the SHG is formed the government should provide an initial amount to help the members to sustain the group. For the first time in Puducherry the transgenders would be treated as a member of the EXCLUSIVE SELF HELP GROUP to be formed for them. Further, they added that after receiving the government approval, they would initiate the further process.

On December 11, 2019, in the premises of SCOHD Society, Pondicherry, the 3rd meeting was organised between the Community and DRDA key Officials. State Anchor, Mr. Lakshman, Gender Coordinator Mrs. Savithri, Regional Development Officer, Mr. Kathirvel, Mr. Karthikeyan and Mr. Armugam had a meaningful discussion with Dr. Sheethal, Director of the SCOHD Society. During the meeting the esteemed officers of DRDA had shown tremendous interest and explained in detail about how to start an SHG and how to get the financial assistance for the group members through various beneficial schemes of the government. They explained that each self-help group comprises of 5 members. They also would like to offer support to create 12 SHGs for the Community. Further they had decided to organize a meeting of SHGs on 15th of every month. It's a historical step in itself, for the entire Puducherry Region, towards the welfare of the community people who are living in constant social stigma. Dr. Sheethal's persistence to uplift the Community has started bearing the fruits.

The members of 12 SHGs have formed a 9-members federation to ensure the smooth functioning of the groups. The federation consists of President, Vice President, Secretary, Vice Secretary, Treasurer and four SHG representatives. In the meeting the federation had taken an unanimous decision that every member of SHG should contribute Rs. 500 as a saving for the group on a monthly basis. The saving amount can be used as a Revolving Fund for SHG for 10 months installments @2% interest.

With the consent of Dr. Sheethal, the federation was named as Agni Siragugal Transgender Federation. The federation has opened the savings bank account in Microsate Indian Bank, Lenin Street (Puducherry),branch.

With the gracious support of DRDA officials and with the constant motivation of the visionary leader Dr. Sheethal, the Community members have applied for the cow loan through SHGs. Further, under MGNERGA, they have applied for 100 days work.

During the Third meeting of SHG, held on March 15’ 2020, about 12 SHGs group members have received the loan through the Revolving Fund an amount of Rs.7000 per member and also proposed to release Rs.1.5 lakhs to the groups from DRDA.

For the smooth functioning of the Federation, the DRDA has appointed Mx. Bhavadharani, as the Federation Manger, Mx. Honey as the Community Professional and Mx. Rithika as the accountant. Salary of the above three staff paid by DRDA

Dr. Sheethal has proved that she belongs to the cadre of revolutionary activists. She has created, nurtured and expanded the platform of SCOHD Society into a multidimensional level to assure and to endure the radical upliftment of the Transgender communities. The platform assures them a strong exposure in various arenas such as, encouraging them to upgrade technical qualification through various courses, to adopt a healthy lifestyle, to benefit from different government schemes and to live a secured, beautiful, stress-free community based quality life.
