On the first day of the project, students will be given an initial project outline that links to the unit on decimal, percentage, and fraction conversions. The outline will describe exactly what the student will be expected to create and the project's goals. The students will be asked to think of the foods that they eat at home as part of their culture. Once the students come up with their favorite cultural food, they will be asked to write down the ingredients that are found within that food. Once the recipe is complete, the students will be asked to add the percentages of each ingredient. I will provide an example to my students: I am a member of the Jewish community, and one of the most popular foods that we have is called Mandel Bread. The ingredients in Mandel Bread include flour, sugar, eggs, oil, and chocolate chips. The percentages associated with each ingredient are 20% flour, 20% sugar, 10% eggs, 10% oil, and 40% chocolate chips. I would allow the students to use technology to be able to research more about their culture and the various foods within their culture. The preference would be to have students choose foods they have regularly at home; however, as some individuals are not as exposed to culture as others, they would have technology as a backup plan.Â
