June 2021 Message
Dear Durham Stake Members,
June 1 marks the official start of hurricane season in North Carolina, and some are predicting that this year will be more active than usual. Even though our area is many miles away from the ocean, we can still feel devastating effects from hurricanes and tropical storms. As we follow the Lord's counsel to "prepare every needful thing" (Doctrine & Covenants 109:8), it is important for us to prepare for hurricanes.
Preparing for hurricanes means preparing for power outages, flooding, and tornadoes, among other things. Here are some resources that can help you and your family prepare for these types of emergencies:
National Hurricane Center, which can tell you when potential hurricanes are coming
How to make a Disaster Kit
Info on evacuation, should the need arise to leave our area
Another important way to prepare for hurricane season is to talk to your ministering brothers and sisters and help them to become equipped and prepared, making sure you are familiar with the things they may need in the event of a storm.
Our stake may be asked to help with crisis response and relief in nearby towns or states that may be harder hit than us. When we are prepared and equipped, we are better able to go to the assistance of others. If that need arises, there will be information shared about how to participate in the response effort.
As you prepare, we invite you to remember Noah, who followed God's commandment to prepare by building an ark before the floods came, so that by the time the disaster hit he and his family (and all of the animals) had a plan and were safe. Teaching the story of Noah could be a fun way to talk about preparedness with kids during a family home evening lesson.
Sincerely,
Holly and Chris Earls
