AMES Language Courses:
If you want to study abroad and transfer language credits back to Duke, please first contact the GEO office.
After receiving your language course syllabi from the GEO system, we will review and approve/disapprove them.
Note that we will assign 100, 200, 300 and 400 as our default codes to study abroad language courses.
For example, if you plan to take JPN 203 and JPN204 abroad, the transferred course credits would appear as JPN200 and JPN200 on your transcript.
FL:
If you want to count these credits towards your FL requirement, you need to first take a language placement test with the language program after returning from study abroad. Please first email Dr. Yunchuan Chen, stating that you would like to request an FL for your study abroad course. He will direct you to the corresponding program coordinator for a placement test. Whether an FL can be given depends on the placement test result. For example, if one student finishes JPN203 and JPN 204 in Japan and is placed at JPN305 after coming back to Duke, two FL credits (JPN203 & JPN204) will be granted. If the student is unfortunately placed at JPN204, only one FL credit (JPN203) will be given.
*Students need to submit a separate document for FL.
Please google 'Duke FL code form' to find the PDF file. After your placement test result is reviewed and approved by Dr. Chen, please fill out and submit the PDF file to him for a signature.
