Navaratri and the chakras

During Navaratri, each day honors a different form of the Divine Mother and corresponds to the awakening of specific chakras. The first three days are dedicated to Durga (Kali, Kumari, Trimurti) who governs Mooladhara (root), Svadhishthana (sacral), and Manipura (solar plexus) chakras, representing the removal of impurities, negative tendencies, and ego. The next three days honor Lakshmi (Kalyani, Preeti, Vrada) associated with Anahata (heart), Vishuddha (throat), and Ajna (third eye) chakras, focusing on spiritual wealth, divine love, and higher knowledge. The final three days are devoted to Saraswati (Saraswati, Mahakali, Siddhi) connecting to the highest aspects of Ajna and Sahasrara (crown) chakra, symbolizing ultimate wisdom and enlightenment.

Floors of the world

"Akasher dike takiye heto na". This is a sentence that loosely translate to dont look at the sky when you are walking. This is told by mothers in quite a strict tone to the kids who always seem to be caught by the passing cloud or a little birdie. So I took my Ma's words seriously... I looked down and discovered a world of my own. Every step was like discovering a new world. A world with its own history, own story and own beauty. Here's to the floors of the world that are decked up by tiles.

Dasa Mahavidya

Mahavidya means divine wisdom. There was a time when it was regarded that the divine feminine (called the adi parashakti ) was the ultimate. She took birth as Sati and then as Parvati. So Parvati took on 10 different forms or aspects called the mahavidyas (like kali, tara, shodashi, Bhairavi etc) . All of them have Shiva as their consort in some form except Dhumavati. It is said that when Sati immolated herself at Daksha's yagna all her aspects or forms stood in the 10 cardinal directions around Shiva.

The first Mahavidya goddess Kali.

The ever-beautiful consort of Mahakal. She exists beyond the Maya (illusion of life) and is Nirguna devoid of the concept of pure and impure. She exists beyond time when the universe itself ceases to exist.

The fourth Mahavidya, Devi Bhuvaneshwari.

She is seated on the lap of Trayambaka Bhairava. She is also known as Adi Parashakti or Parvati, i.e. one of the earliest forms of Shakti. Her name signifies the goddess of the Universe. She is often considered to be the Goddess of Love as the Iccha Shakti. She creates the power of love, space, gives freedom, as unattached love has no boundaries. She plays the role of creator and protector as well. It is believed that one who worships her with a true heart and prayers over her regularly is blessed with 64 divine virtues. The worshipper of goddess Bhuvansehwar is said to succeed in all walks of life. It is believed that the goddess Bhuvaneshwari brings happiness and removes sorrow in life and forgives all sins.

Maa Tara the second of the ten Mahavidyas.

She is strikingly similar to Maa Kali but she carries the sacrificial sword and blue lotus. She is depicted in a blue hue and stands atop her consort Bhairava. She is a mother goddess and she blesses her devotees. She can be seen in all her glory in Tara peeth where it is believed that Sati’s eye fell. She loves blood sacrifice and usually resides in cremation grounds. Though she looks menacing, she is very loving to all who seek her.

The ninth Mahavidya, Devi Matangi.( specifically, this is the Raja-Matangi )

Often known as the Tantric Saraswati, she is described as Chandalini or an outcast. Like Saraswati Devi, Matangi Devi governs speech, music, knowledge, and the arts. Her worship is done to acquire supernatural powers, especially gaining control over enemies, attracting people to oneself, acquiring mastery over the arts, and gaining supreme knowledge. She is also described to love the parrot and is embodied in the nectar of song. The green complexion is associated with deep knowledge and is also the colour of Budha, the presiding deity of the planet Mercury who governs intelligence. Matangi is often depicted with a parrot in her hands, representing speech. The veena symbolizes her association with music. She is said to have intoxicating eyes

The fifth Mahavidya, Goddess Bhairavi.

Her name means awe-inspiring and she stays in Kailash with her beloved Bhairava. She is the controller of the three stages of consciousness i.e active, dream, and deep sleep. She is the creator of Muladhara chakra in the form of kama rupa. Bhairavi controls the changes taking place in the universe. In this continuous cycle of creation and destruction, Bhairavi represents knowledge and civilization, she symbolizes the modifications of the universe by mankind, the progress of humans, and detailed studies.

The Sixth Mahavidya, Maa Chinnamasta

Also known as Prachandachandika. She is one of the ten goddesses from the esoteric tradition of Tantra, and a ferocious aspect of Parvati, the Hindu Mother goddess. The self-decapitated goddess holds her own severed head in one hand and a Kharga in another. Three jets of blood spurt out of her bleeding neck and are drunk by her severed head and two attendants (Dakini and Varnini).

I have always been a sucker for cards. Whether its invitations to parties, birthday wishes or weddings(my pick). So obviously I did the invites for my own Biye(wedding). I created personalised invites for all the celebration segments.

Ugaoo #ModTheUgaooPod Challenge

The Brief:

While lockdown caused a dip in our productivity levels, one thing we are certain about is that your interest in gardening spiked! So we're going to use this opportunity to our advantage (and yours)! We are calling all artists to help us redesign our packaging with artwork that is any and all things gardening! And to further encourage your creativity, So let your imagination run wild and help us #ModTheUgaooPod! 🎨✨

My Thought Process:

Ugaoo had come up with a beautiful challenge where we got to design their packaging containers. Being a plant parent and having some amateur level interest in packaging designs I churned this in about a couple of hours.

My thoughts were simple: Ugaoo is one of the best startups and they make caring for houseplants extremely easy whether you are a pro or just starting out. Ugaoo is for everybody! So I wanted to show that all members of the family irrespective of their age, routines, and habits can become successful plant parents. I used the art Indian embroidery both as the top section and also as a background. For the midsection, I showed a typical Indian family who have happily turned plant parents. The bottom section is an attempt to show the varieties of plants available at Ugaoo.

This packaging was one of the shortlisted entries. Though I didn't manage to win anything but, I learnt a lot from participating

The Mother Goddess

In my hometown, Durga Puja is the biggest festival. people celebrate the homecoming of Durga from her husband's place Kailash. The whole celebration is actually to honour the 9 forms of the Mother Goddess as per Navaratri traditions.

For this project, I married the simplicity of vector art with Bengali Typography to bring out the various forms of the Goddess.

This project starts from Mahalaya ( or homecoming) and ends with the goddess departing on Vijaya Dashami.
