HMH Login will be used for in-class and at-home assignments. Login is the same as IXL.
We will continue working on our DU Water Conservation Project. During Writing time, we will work on finalizing our final letter to administration with the proposed posters to post throughout the school and potential DU water bottle merchandise.
During science time, we will work in groups to create posters to present to the school during assembly (using the sticky white poster paper to be provided by the school - no poster purchase required by families). The entire class will need to work together to present such as assigning a speaker to open the presentation and a closer to conclude the message of the project. There will be at least 4 groups - 1) Why conserving or saving water is important 2) Why it matters to Muslims 3) What problems are currently present at DU regarding water efforts 4) What can we implement to save water at the school

We will begin Unit 6: Patterns in the Sky
In Unit 5, students explored Earth’s systems and their interactions, including those that shape Earth’s surface. They surveyed different components of Earth’s systems, including rock, water, air, and organisms, and how they affect each other. In this unit, students will explore gravity and the sun, including their effects on Earth’s systems and matter.
They will also explore patterns in the night sky over time.

HMH Activity: Earth's Systems
In "Earth's Systems," students observe the interactions between Earth's spheres and how Earth's spheres affect one another. They are then challenged to apply those observations to predict how each of Earth's spheres is likely to respond to a change in one of the other spheres. Your notes are saved as you type and use the camera function to take a picture to include in your notes.
Due by Wednesday (submission deadline extended)
Group Project: Submit 5 observations by Friday
5th Grade Group Project: “Saving Water at Our School!”
Project Goal
Students will work in groups to discover ways our school uses water and create a plan to help everyone conserve water.
Assignment Overview
Your group will create a Water Conservation Action Plan for our school. You will investigate how water is used, identify wasteful habits, and come up with solutions students and teachers can start using right away.
Each group will present a poster or slideshow explaining your findings and your plan.
Step-by-Step Directions
As a group, explore the school environment:
Where is water used? (bathrooms, cafeteria, classroom sinks, gym, outdoor areas)
Where might water be wasted? (leaking sinks, running water too long, water fountains, watering plants, etc.)
Talk to a staff member if possible (custodian, cafeteria worker, or teacher) to learn about water use.
Write down at least 5 observations.
We will conclude Unit 5: Earth Interactions and Resources.
Lesson 1: Earth's Systems Interact
Lesson 2: Water in Earth's Systems
Lesson 3: Resource Use Affects the Environment
Lesson 4: People Can Protect the Environment
Our next unit will cover Patterns in the Sky.
HW:

We will begin Unit 5: Earth Interactions and Resources.
In Unit 4, students explored how energy and matter move through ecosystems. They used models to see how organisms interact and survive in environments where their needs are met, and how native and nonnative species affect ecosystems. In this unit, students will explore interactions
of Earth’s systems, and how humans affect those systems and the resources they contain. They will identify ways that humans can conserve environments and resources, including the use of specific technologies.

Unit Test: Energy and Matter in Organisms Wednesday
We will begin Unit 4: Energy and Matter in Ecosystems
In Unit 3, students explored how matter and energy move between organisms, with plants and other producers using light energy, air, water, and nutrients to make chemical energy in the form of food. Students found out that the food made by producers to feed themselves serves as the base of many food chains, and multiple food chains form food webs that help shape ecosystems. In this unit, students will use models to explore how organisms interact in ecosystems and how these interactions can change environments.
