Make your own winter hat using wax relief and watercolor!
Materials:
Winter Hat Worksheet: Download image to the left. (print on heavy paper!).
White Crayon
Watercolor (I used liquid and mixed it with water, but you can use solid cake watercolor)
(Optional)- Cup of water if you use cake watercolor.
Brush
Tissue Paper
Glue Stick
Steps:
Start by printing out the Winter Hat worksheet to the left. Download and print on heavier paper (I used an 80lb, but watercolor paper would be the best).
Using the White Crayon, Draw patterns and shapes on your hat. This may be hard to see, but try to fill in spaces and make a lot of patterns!
Go over the whole Winter Hat with your watercolor! Brush your watercolor over carefully and remember- do not use TOO MUCH watercolor, as it will cover over the white crayon!
If you are using cake watercolor, dip your brush in your water cup, then put it onto the cake to moisten it and to get watercolor on the brush.
If you are using liquid watercolor, mix a little bit of the liquid with water to dilute it and make it lighter.
Let your Winter Hat dry!
Once Dry, Cut your Winter Hat out from the paper, and recycle the scrap paper.
(Optional)- Cut out small squares of tissue paper and crumple them up.
(Optional)- Using your glue stick, put some glue down onto the top puff of the Winter Hat, then quickly cover that area with the crumpled tissue paper. Fill the entire puff like this, then give it time to dry!
Splash some watercolor down and use a straw to make your own monster!
Materials:
Watercolor (I used liquid concentrated watercolor and added water to dilute)
Straw
Paper (any size!)
Tray (or something to put your paper on)
Cup (for watercolor)
Pipette (eye-dropper)
Sharpie
Google Eyes
Glue Stick
Steps:
Start by mixing your watercolor. I tend to simple spray some watercolor into the cup, and then mix in some water, just eye-balling it. No need to be very specific!
With the paper on the tray or the surface you are using to keep your table safe, use the pipette to drop some watercolor onto the center of the paper.
Use your straw to blow the watercolor around the paper. Be careful not to let the watercolor drip from the paper onto the tray!
You can turn your tray around to make the watercolor wider as you work.
Once You have a shape you like, let the watercolor dry.
With your paper dry, you can add your googly eyes! Use your glue stick to glue the googly eyes down onto your paper somewhere on the watercolor.
Use the Sharpie (or another marker) to make the legs and arms.
I used an "L" shape for each of hte legs, and made a "fork" shape for the arms.
With the arms and legs drawn on, you can cut out your watercolor monster.
I cut around the monster leaving a little bit of white edge.
