Psychological Evaluations (Ages 5 to 45)

This type of evaluation is given to identify psychological functioning including emotional, behavioral, and personality issues; this evaluation includes a battery of personality, behavioral, and intellectual tests. A psychological evaluation can provide information clarifying a diagnosis, such as the identification of depression and anxiety disorders, and setting counseling goals. This type of testing also identifies interpersonal and intellectual strengths and weaknesses. Typically, these evaluations take two half-days or one full day to complete.
  • Provides recommendations about the severity of symptoms/difficulties and interventions to address findings
  • Provides recommendations that may be used to obtain academic accommodations and to recommend behavioral support strategies in academic settings.

Psycho-Educational Evaluations (Ages 5 to 45)

This type of evaluation is given to identify learning differences, such as Dyslexia and other Learning Disabilities, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and academic strengths and weaknesses.
A basic evaluation typically includes a battery of intellectual, academic, and perceptual processing tests assessing intellectual functions, visual and auditory perceptual abilities, reading, writing, spelling, math, and fine/gross motor skills.
All psycho-educational evaluations include screenings for emotional/behavioral and attention problems based on information received from the parent and teachers, interviews with the client, and behavioral observations by Dr. Benton.
A more comprehensive evaluation is also offered, and may include classroom observations, screening for language issues, and/or more specific tests to assess attention (Continuous Performance Test), to assess autism spectrum disorders, and behavioral difficulties.
Typically, these evaluations take two half-days or one full day to complete; a second testing day may be required at no additional cost. Younger children are given a partial-day evaluation which takes a half day to complete. A comprehensive speech/language evaluation is not provided.
  • Provides guidance for educational placement
  • Provides specific testing and documentation for ACT/SAT accommodations for learning disabilities and ADHD, such as extended time on tests
  • Provides recommendations for interventions to improve academic performance and to address learning differences
  • Provides recommendations for academic accommodations for test-taking and classroom modifications in school settings.

ADHD Evaluations (Ages 5 to 45)

For clients who are primarily in need of an evaluation to determine the presence of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and abbreviated evaluation is offered. This evaluation includes intellectual screening measures, limited academic testing, emotional/behavioral screening, and attention testing with Continuous Performance Test (CPT). Typically, these evaluations take 2-3 hours to complete. If academic skills are a focus of concern in addition to attention problems, this evaluation is not recommended; instead the client should undergo the psycho-educational evaluation.
  • Provides diagnostic information and recommendations on intervention strategies to improve overall functioning.

Provided with all Evaluations:

Communication of Test Results: A parent/client conference to discuss the evaluation is scheduled as soon after testing as possible. We prefer that both parents attend for children under the age of 18. The conference usually lasts one hour, during which time the results are discussed at length. Childcare is not available during conferences.
Written Report: Four to six weeks following the conference, an extended written report will be mailed. The report will include the reason for the evaluation, notable history, observations during testing, test results, interpretations and recommendations. The written report will be provided to the parent(s) or client after the evaluation. Unless requested to do so, Dr. Benton does not send copies of the report to other individuals or agencies.
  • Provides documentation needed to obtain academic accommodations for testing in school settings, and classroom modifications in elementary school, secondary school, and college settings.
  • Provides recommendations on intervention strategies to improve overall functioning.
