I believe in using variety of teaching methods in all my classes. These days students have so many things going on in their life that they may study or need my help at odd times. For this reason, I have developed a number of resources that can be accessed any time. For this reason all my course material is available on my personal website. On this website I provide all handouts, power points, Pencasts links and other resources that I think might be useful for the students. Students also have access to these documents on the college's learning management system (Blackboard, Canvas or iLearn).
Chapter Summaries: In my general chemistry classes I provide chapter summaries to give a brief idea of what was important in the chapter. This also serves as an exam preparation guidelines.
Power Point Slides: I use power points as accessory to teaching rather than the method of teaching. (My preferred method is using the board). The power points are edited version of publisher's power point, with my own theme and problem solving.
Lectures on YouTube: I have taken the power points I created to do a voice over lecture on them for students to listen to outside of classroom. This is really useful in case students miss a class or would like to review material. I also use these lectures on topics I want to flip. (YouTube Channel playlists).
Practice Problems: Some topics require more practice than what is given in textbooks. I give practice problems to my students to prepare for exams or understand the material. These practice problems may resemble what students might see in the exam. We solve some of these in class as time permits.
Pencasts: these are my latest work. I use LiveScribe pen to solve problems that might be more challenging to the students, or explain concepts using examples. This is by far the most popular resource used by the students.
Grading Matrix: In the organic chemistry labs, I provide a matrix for students so they know what I am expecting from them in their lab reports. This matrix is detailed outline on how to write a lab report. (Click here to see the matrix)
Lab Techniques: I made videos of teaching my students the lab techniques for general and organic chemistry labs, so they are more prepared when they come to lab. Most students watch these videos and are ready to start the lab when they come in.
Study Sessions: Nothing is like a good old tutoring session. If students request it, I provide study session for them either weekly or before the exams. These study sessions have helped to elevate the class average by a 5-15% in their grades.
Expectation as a Student: I have also provided a guideline on how to be a good student. It is a detailed description of my philosophy on what a good learner is. I leave it as an option for the students to read. (Click here to read my philososphy)
As mentioned before all the above can be found on my website.
