ACHIEVEMENTS
Technology in Teaching: I have developed and taught three online chemistry courses using Blackboard and Canvas: General Chemistry 1 and II; and Chemistry and Society, a Liberal Learning course. I have routinely used Clickers in my classes to gauge student learning while also giving them credit for the activity. Recently I have flipped my classroom in general and organic chemistry 1 lectures. I recorded lectures on power point (available on YouTube) and used LiveScribe pen to create lecture materials (available on my college web page). I am also comfortable in creating web pages and have always maintained a resource page for my classes, and new programs.
Lab Manual – While at Park University I had developed and used my own lab manual for general chemistry 1 and 2 labs. At Palm Beach State I collaborated with my department colleagues to create a manual for general chemistry 1 and 2. I have written and currently use my own manual for organic chemistry 1 and 2 labs.
Co-Teaching – I have developed and co-taught two courses; Forensic Science (2001: with Dr. Greg Plumb, Professor of Criminal Justice) and India: History, Culture and People of India (2004: with Dr. Ronald Miriani, Professor of History).
Symposium Organizer – I have organized and presided over several symposia at national conferences (Biennial Conference on Chemical Education and American Chemical Society) over the past 25 years.
Innovative Programs – I initiated a Student Mentor Program for SS100 (Freshman Seminar) Junior and senior students were chosen to mentor the freshman students. I also helped create a new Service Learning programs in Hawaii with students. I was also started the Chemistry Club at Park University, which remained active during the entire time of my tenure.
Undergraduate Research - Advised students in undergraduate research in the Honor’s Program at Park and Shenandoah Universities. Students worked on synthesis of new porphyrin derivatives and one worked on an air quality project in collaboration with EPA in Kansas City.
Initiated a Service Learning Course to be taught in Brasil – (2005 and 2006) Visited Recife, Brasil, on a Park University sponsored visit to initiate the Global Education initiative of Park to incorporate Service Learning in its curriculum. While in Recife, offered workshops to two universities on the on-line program at Park and Service Learning. Visited Recife again from 3-13 March, 2006 to co-offer courses in Health Awareness with the nursing faculty and students.
Global Citizenship Program – (2007-08). Selected as faculty leader to lead a group of eleven Shenandoah University students, staff and faculty on cultural experience trip to India during spring break.
National Chemistry Week Chair – Was chair of the NCW committee of American Chemical Society, Kansas City section, for eight years. During that time, I organized and carried out various events of chemistry outreach at a variety of locations. Also appeared on local TV stations’ morning and afternoon news to promote the event.
Mentoring New Faculty – Have been a mentor at Park University and Palm Beach State College. At PBSC I designed a web page for new adjunct faculty to get acquainted with college policies and department guidelines. Work with them throughout the semester to help with their teaching.
