Jaw
Jaw
For the jaw can work on the temporalis, masseter and pterygoids. For the temporalis: place fingers on the back of the jaw and create some downward traction, then use your muscles to gradually pull the jaw back to its original position (feel for activation around the temple). For the masseter put your fingers on the lower jaw edge, open your mouth and then gradually close the mouth against the resistance from your fingers. For the pterygoids, place your finger in the space below your ear between the back of your jawbone and the front of your mastoid bone. If the space is tight, the musculature from both these areas may be restricted. Move the jaw away from the finger and gradually control its return to the starting position. Try with different angles of the mouth opening. Be sure to do this on both sides. Also try the same movement with your fingers midway to the back of the jaw, slightly pushing the jaw to the side (so your teeth no longer align) before return to the original position. Try with different angles of mouth opening or lower jaw thrust forwards to activate different fibers. Muscles such as sternocleidomastoid and splenius capitis also can influence jaw dynamics.
