I developed the TR-TAN Counselling Framework, an Islamic-integrative model that systematically aligns psychological responsibility with spiritual purification (tazkiyah al-nafs). The framework integrates core principles of Reality Therapy and Choice Theory with Islamic psychospiritual processes to support holistic mental well-being
TR-TAN guides clients to reconnect with their fitrah, strengthen emotional resilience and make value-driven decisions grounded in both personal accountability and spiritual ethics. The model has been empirically examined at doctoral level, formally copyrighted, and recognised through national and international innovation awards. It has been applied within community, educational and mental-health promotion settings in Malaysia
My research examines self-compassion from an Islamic perspective, conceptualised as ihsan kendiri, drawing on Qur’anic teachings and Prophetic traditions. This work reframes self-compassion not as self-indulgence, but as ethical self-regard grounded in mercy, responsibility and spiritual consciousness.
I contribute to the development of culturally grounded conceptualisations, assessment approaches and counselling interventions, with findings disseminated through peer-reviewed and indexed journal publications and scholarly book chapters. This body of work supports more culturally responsive mental-health practice within Muslim and multicultural contexts.
I apply Single-Subject Research (SSR) design to evaluate counselling interventions in real-world clinical and community settings. This methodology is particularly suited to youth mental-health cases, small-sample contexts and short-term or individualised interventions, where large-scale experimental designs are often impractical
My work demonstrates how SSR can generate practice-based evidence, strengthen clinical decision-making and bridge the gap between counselling theory and applied outcomes.
My Islamic-integrative counselling practice synthesises evidence-based psychological approaches with Islamic spiritual resources. Key elements include:
Structured Tazkiyah al-Nafs processes for self-refinement
Qur’anic reflection to support meaning-making and emotional insight
Du‘a-based emotional grounding to enhance regulation and inner stability
Emphasis on responsible autonomy guided by spiritual and ethical values
This approach supports clients in developing psychological clarity, emotional balance and spiritually grounded agency within their lived contexts.
