For this project, I researched the impacts of social media on myself and society, which is a major topic!
After I took the time to take the "Am I ADDICTED to social media?" quiz, it came to the conclusion that I "have a healthy relationship with social media."
The text reads, "Congratulations! Psychologists estimate that as many as 5 to 10% of Americans meet the criteria for social media addiction today. But luckily, that's not you! Not checking social media every few minutes doesn't make you feel anxious, as you prefer to live in the moment rather than through your apps. You use social media to your advantage at work and to connect with friends and family, but you know when to put it away. Keep it up!"
I would say that I agree with the results/conclusion 1000% due to the simple fact that I'm usually not using social media apps like that at all. I like it when things are more genuine and in the moment, more than anything, rather than whipping out a phone to show everybody else.
The most interesting statistic that caught my eye is this survey about age gaps for these apps in Pew Research's articles. As someone who has used all of these apps and is still using some of them, it's pretty close to the apps I use the most, for example, TikTok, X (Twitter), and Snapchat.
In my opinion, I believe social media has had mostly a positive and negative impact on society because it's a great tool for people to learn new stuff and grow in certain things. Back in the day, a lot of people didn't have access to all of this information, which is great, but on the other hand, I feel like social media has had an effect on people and their effort. Things like AI and social media influencers have altered people's minds far away from reality; the first thing people do when they wake up before brushing their teeth is get on social media. If everyone could just find a balance between real life and online, everything would be great!
Through this project, I learned that I'm in a good spot when it comes to the usage of social media. Even though it is all around me, I tend to enjoy life in the moment, but that doesn't mean I don't use social media at all. Social media can be an addiction if it's not controlled, and you'll start to see it determine your mood and how you judge yourself in life; just remember, everyone is human, everyone has flaws, and no matter what facade you see on the media, everything isn't what it seems, so just be you!
