Learning online can feel very isolated, both from the instructor and your classmates. When I first taught online, I asked my students what they recommended to facilitate connections online. Based on their feedback, I decided to try participation through Discord! So far, students have really enjoyed it and said they feel closer to me as well as each other.
Discord is a chat app, similar to programs such as Skype or Slack. It’s geared toward video game players, but is used in many different settings.
Create an Account
If you already have a Discord account, you are welcome to use your existing account. If not, you'll need to create an account. You'll need to "register" for an account. You do not need to use your real name, but you'll need to let me know your username in the pre-course module, so I can track your participation. You can choose any username you like, but be mindful your classmates will see it too. You can also use any email you like to sign up. You do not need to use your SHSU email. For a step-by-step guide, check out this video. If you decide to change your username later, please let me know via email.
You can use Discord on your Browser or the mobile/desktop app.
I highly recommend watching this video tutorial if you've never used Discord. You don't need to create a server because we already have a server for the class! You can skip from 1:27-2:33.
2. Connect to our Discord Server
I share the link to our Discord server in Blackboard in the main menu under "Connect." This is the link you'll use to join a server. You can right click the link the copy and paste it into Discord "Join a Server" or just click the link and it will take you to the server.
To join a server from Discord, click the green plus sign "Add a server" then enter in the link info from Blackboard.
3. Post!
You can sign on anytime and post in the channels.
You'll need to post in Discord under the corresponding channels to address the weekly Discord discussion prompt(s) located within each weekly module. For example, for Module 2, type your response in #module2 channel! In the Module Outline, you'll see where the prompt is located.
There are no specific length requirements.
Participation on Discord is worth 10 points for each discussion post: 130 points possible total.
The benefit to Discord is that it is available anytime. You can provide your weekly response anytime (earlier or later than the current week). I may not respond immediately, especially in the evenings/early mornings. I don’t expect you to respond instantly either!
Of course, you are more than welcome to interact more than the minimum! Discord is intended to enhance your learning and help you connect with me and other students. As you'll see on Discord, I'll also post random things not necessarily related to the class.
Discord discussion posts are best completed by each Monday 11:59pm
This is what our Discord server will look like.
The Text Channels are where you will post the weekly Discord Discussion Posts. You'll see the prompt and my posts there as well.
The Information Channels are optional and available to help you.
We also have Voice Channels, which are completely optional. I like having the voice channels in case you'd like to meet with each other or with me!
The message box is where you will type and submit your post. You can add text, files, links, emojis, and GIFs in the message box at the bottom.

You can also direct message me privately! Click the home (Discord Icon) button and then Direct Messages.
Treat everyone with respect. Engage with patience and empathy.
I strongly encourage you to interact with each other! You can react and comment on one anothers' posts! This is not required, but it helps build our classroom community if you do interact.
**If you ever have an issue with another student (i.e., inappropriate DMs or comments in Discord, PLEASE let me know! You can set your account to black users or restrict from sending DMs. If I determine that the behavior is severe enough, I will kick the person from Discord and report to Title IX if I need to. I really hope we don't ever have a situation like this! I haven't so far.
