What Can You See The College & Career Counselor For?
College Representative Visits:
College Representatives from many colleges/universities come to DPHS to meet with interested students. They talk about the campus, programs, majors, entrance requirements, and more. If you are interested, ask Guidance for a pass to attend a College Rep Meeting.
College Visits Binder: The College & Career Center keeps detailed notes and contact information on each school that has come to visit. There is an informational binder and a bookcase full of informational brochures for a variety of schools in the College & Career Center.
On-Site Admission Days:
Many local 2-year and 4-year colleges will host On-Site Admissions here at DPHS where you will receive an on-the-spot admissions decision, and the application fee is often waived. These will begin Fall of 2023 for the class of 2024.
College Search:
Gain help with your initial college searches. We can use College Board, Naviance, and more for these college searches.
Students can narrow down their searches by using filters on the websites. These filters can be searched by location, GPA range, Major, SAT/ACT range, and more.
College Essay / Personal Statement:
The College & Career Center can help with college essays. We will start with topic exploration and go over the 7 topic prompts from The Common Application.
After we explore topics, we start narrowing down the outline of the essay.
It is also suggested that students make appointments with their English teachers to help with grammar and proofreading.
Resume Building:
The College & Career Center can work with students on their resumes from start to finish.
We can use google docs, Canva, or other Resume Building websites to form these resumes because they have great high school resume templates.
The students and The College & Career Counselor brainstorm activities, clubs, sports, work experience, and more that can be added to their resumes.
College Applications:
The College & Career Counselor can help with The Common Application, The Suffolk Community College Application, The SUNY/CUNY Applications and more. We work on applications from start to finish. We sign up and fill out the entire application together step by step.
We also conduct college searches on The Common Application which are then added to the Dashboard to apply to in the future.
Financial Aid (FAFSA):
We offer a lot of information about what the FAFSA is, how to fill it out, and any questions students may have. This is all listed on the college and career website which is walked through with the students.
There are instructional videos and helpful tips and tricks from St. Joseph’s College in this section of our website.
We post all virtual financial aid nights from St. Joseph’s College and other colleges/universities as well.
The College & Career Center hosts a FAFSA completion night for all parents/students. Feel free to attend this event for help completing the FAFSA.
Scholarships:
We offer a lot of scholarship opportunities on our college and career website. Scholarships from College Board, StudentScholarships, ScholarshipGuidance, Bold.org, Niche & more are available on our website.
The College & Career Counselor works closely with the students to show them how to access this page and to figure out which scholarships are good for them to apply to.
Career Exploration / College Major:
The College & Career Center can work with students on Career Exploration. We can use the career cluster posters and some helpful websites to help students find a career path and college major.
& More!
I am available to help with all things college/career, life after high school, job searches, the military, trades, unions and so much more!
