There are two important groups to train at every Double Up location:
In the grocery setting, these could be in-store managers and/or corporate employees. Each Double Up site needs someone willing to champion the program and put in the time and energy needed to make it a success. Your job as the lead organization is to empower managers to understand :
(1) program rules
(2) reporting requirements
(3) on-site marketing and promotion of Double Up
(4) employee training
These people are the front lines of communication with Double Up shoppers. At the farmers market, they are the vendors. In a grocery setting, they are typically cashiers. Some lead organizations play a direct role in employee training; some empower managers to train their own employees; some take a blended approach. Regardless of your approach, focus on giving employees the tools they need to:
(1) understand and follow program rules
(2) have positive customer interactions
(3) speak knowledgeably about the program
Some program leads host in-person meetings to train managers; others host webinars. Either way, we recommend:
Make materials available so managers can revisit the training after the fact. You can record the webinar and/or provide a PowerPoint presentation and notes. Managers may turn over or train other staff to use the program. In both cases, providing materials in as many formats as possible can save you time and can cater to multiple learning styles.
Clearly outline the arc of the Double Up program so managers know what to expect. We recommend, at the very least, outlining:
You may also offer additional guidance, such as tips and tricks for managers to promote Double Up in their communities and on-location.
