Program for April 22nd Concert
The Robert Jordan Piano Festival, named in memory of our prestigious emeritus piano faculty member, will take place online this year with three virtual events focusing on a theme of solo and collaborative piano music written by underrepresented composers.
"I want to thank you and your colleagues for providing us with the enlightening, delightful, and educational evening of Piano Shorts of under-represented composers. Although I was only able to stay connected for the first hour last night, I just finished listening and viewing what I missed. You have truly provided a needed educational service, and how wonderful that you included an array of faculty colleagues, students, and guests. Your sophomore student who played the Fenberg sonata is quite exceptional."
"... All day I’ve been processing my thoughts on the festival. I think it’s important for you to know that we all (your students), know how hard you worked to pull this festival off. We are so appreciative of the experience you gave us, and after Wosner’s concert a few of us sat in front of Rosch for two hours talking, because we were in shock from all the greatness we were just exposed to. And for me, I was in shock from everything I had learned about myself in just three days.
I guess my point is that you should be really proud of what you were able to pull off. It was obvious to us that you put a lot of thought into who you wanted to invite. All three of them were not only incredible musicians, but they also were so relatable and didn’t make us feel inferior. We wouldn’t have wanted anybody different."

"Working with Dr. Yang was an incredible experience that left me excited to approach my repertoire in a new way with a fresh outlook on my playing. It is extremely beneficial to learn from guest artists with different expertise and perspectives. I have been at a point with my repertoire where I feel like I've hit a wall, and don't know how to push past it. Having a lesson and master class with Dr. Yang has inspired me in exactly the way I needed to perform with more intent and imagination. The opportunity to play on her fortepiano was an incredible and enlightening experience. This is my sixth year at Fredonia, and I can say definitively that every event that Dr. Avni has organized for us has dramatically increased the value of our education. I am excited to come to this event again next year!"

"The RJPF festival offered an abundance of knowledge that made me think differently about my approach to playing piano. These past two days have truly inspired me and deepened my love for the instrument."
-Ezra Aguirre
"This festival was an inspiring, eye-opening experience. It really reminded me why I chose, and still choose, to continue studying piano."
-Kimberly Rauch
"The Robert Jordan Piano Festival was such an excellent experience! The guest performers were wonderful! I especially enjoyed the Masterclass with Yi-Heng Yang because I had the opportunity to work on my piano technique and receive insightful feedback. The Masterclass with Yang was very inspirational and informative."
-Seon Hee Lee
"It was such an eye-opening experience to fully indulge in different realms of music from each of the guest artists. I’m beyond grateful to have had the opportunity to work with them through the masterclasses, lessons and solo recitals, and for the unique inspiration that will stay with me forever."
-Grace Jang
“The Jordan Festival was one of the most transformative experiences of my life. Every concert was unique and polished, and every guest artist was approachable and human. Being surrounded by professional pianists normalized a very high level of artistry, and fundamentally changed my approach to music.”
-Matt Caputy
"This was one of the most unique festivals with the largest variety of performers to come through Fredonia in my time of being here. It was a joy to be surrounded by such talented and kind musicians who share the same passion for the instrument and instrument's history as I do. It was amazing to experience the soundworld as classical composers such Mozart experienced it. It was also the first time I heard a piano tuned using Youngs' temperament. Since the fortepiano was tuned at 430hz which is ten cents below where the modern piano rests, the melodies and harmonies were able to take on new colors. And when the change in temperament is paired with the historical instrument the melodic lines themselves are able to be heard as the composer heard them while composing the lines."
-Jodie S. White
"The Robert Jordan Piano Festival was three days of concentrated learning, listening, playing, and fun. With stellar performances and teaching by world class musicians, the entire experience was incredibly inspiring and will forever remain in my memory."
-Jake DeGarie
"The Jordan Festival was extremely inspiring for me and everyone else that attended. I believe that I learn a lot from observing others’ perspectives and as a direct result, this festival has given me more understanding and appreciation for my instrument."
-Amelia Wroblewski
"Between the guest artists' performances, master classes, and lessons, the Jordan Festival made for an incredibly varied and worthwhile experience at Fredonia. Each guest artist brought something unique to the table (including a stunning fortepiano!), along with an astonishing level of musicianship and historical and pedagogical knowledge."
-Will Rich
"At Robert Jordan Festival, I could learn and feel many things from the masterclasses and performances of world-class pianists.
And thank you to the school for giving students this great opportunity and I hope there will be more of these opportunities in the future."
-Seri Han
"When I have Masterclass with Dr. Yang, I felt the dialogue in Mozart's sonata! It was so funny when I played. Make the sonata more emotional. Dr. Yang explained the process of the opening part to me, I think her explanation will give me a better understanding of Mozart's sonata! And she taught me about fortepiano! The sounds were different than the regular piano and the keyboard smaller! It is very suitable for me and my small hand!"
-Yuting Chen
"I learned a lot in the last three days. Even though I didn’t have a masterclass with all three professional pianists, I still learned a lot of new things when I was watching. I really enjoyed these three days, and thank you to Professor Myer, Professor Yang and Professor Wosner, for giving us a wonderful experience!"
