501 - First Aid Kit (FAK)
501.1 Content of a First Aid Kit
Adhesive, elastic roller bandages - very effective pressure bandages and durable, waterproof bandaging used to cover GSW and/or Other Wounds.
Quikclot - Small pellets designed to close GSWs. Can be used when the bullet is still in place however is not advisable. Only to be used when the round is still in place in an emergency. Insert into the wound as deep as possible and hold pressure for 3 minutes.
Dressings - sterile, applied directly to the wound to cover GSW and/or Other Wounds.
Bandages - for securing dressings, not necessarily sterile.
Gauze roller bandages - absorbent, breathable, and often elastic.
Elastic bandages - used for sprains, and pressure bandages.
Tourniquet - Apply to limbs above open wounds to reduce blood flow to that area.
Antiseptic wipes or sprays - Used for reducing the risk of infection in abrasions or around wounds. Dirty wounds must be cleaned for antiseptics to be effective.
Narcan - Used to neutralise any opioid based narcotics (morphine, heroin, etc.) in the body's system and reduce any side-effects.
Chest seal - A chest seal is used to cover penetrating chest wounds to allow air to escape from the pleural cavity (a small layer of fluid around the lungs that lubricate the lungs when expanding and retracting) without being drawn back in. The aim is to minimise lung collapse associated with this injury and to facilitate lung reinflation. The sticky side of the seal will stick to the skin no matter how much fluid there is on the skin.
Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) is a device used when a patient's heart has stopped beating. The AED sends an electric shock through the body to the heart which will retract the heart muscle and this could make the heart start beating again. Keep in mind that the AED will not always work. Stowed in Patrol Vehicle Separate from FAK.
501.2 Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK)
All Officers carry a choice selection of medical supplies on their person at any given moment. This small IFAK may be located on an Officer's Vest, duty belt or around the holster area.
This small personal storage of medical supplies proves life saving in the event that a wounded Officer has no choice but to provide medical aid to themselves.
