Ludī
De ludīs. . .
In order to support virtual learning and community, Magistra PC has created this space for sharing resources on playing traditionally tabletop or in person games in a virtual manner. Feel free to use any of these materials in classes or virtual club activities.
Verba Remota
Lyla Cerulli and Magistra PC have joined forces to bring you Verba Remota! Using PlayingCards.io, the two Latinists have made the amazing game, Verba, playable on the web. To make a Room of your own, download this file to upload it to PlayingCards.io. See the slides for a walk through on how to create your own room.
Nota bene: The file has been updated on Nov. 27th. The update includes bigger cards that are easier to read and recall buttons to reset the game.
Scrabble
With the assistance of a student, Magistra PC has made an online version of Latin Scrabble. It's not perfect, but it's a start.
How it works:
Make a copy of the board [Click here]
Go to the edit history and name the current version history "Board Reset" for an easy reset once a game is complete.
Share the board with the intended players.
Assign one person to be the letter picker. This can be a player or spectator. Use the Scrabble Bag to spin to see what letters each player will have. After a letter is chosen hit the "x" below the letter to remove it from the bag.
Drag and drop the tiles as they are given to players.
There is table that lists the letters, their point value, how many, and how frequent the word appears in the Latin language. [citation coming soon]
See this video for an explanation on how the board and bag work together.
Publius Publicanus
Do you have a phrase you want to focus on or adjectives that you want to review, or just a game to play as a brain break? Publius Publicanus is game that can give students listening practice, speaking practice, and provide key phrase repetition to help with language acquisition. Magistra PC has made a set of templates for you to play this game virtually with your students. If you're unfamiliar with the game, see Alina Filipescu's explanation on Ignite Language.
