Contrary to popular belief, Gods are neither the oldest or necessarily the strongest beings in the Planes. Primordials and Fiendish Princes can live just as long as Gods and can exceed them in terms of raw power, but only Gods can exert influence in the Material Plane. The areas of this influence are called a Gods Portfolio.

The single trait shared by all Gods is a paranoia regarding the loss of their portfolios, motivating many deities to constantly conspire to expand their own. However, to set about to do such a thing is considered evil.

Conflicts between Gods are almost always acted out by their mortal worshipers, and typically involve killing or converting as many of the enemy Gods followers as possible.

In this regard, mortals can be quite lethal when it comes to making war against a God. Despite their infinite wisdom, almost all Gods are hopelessly incapable of understanding the perspective of mortals and are prone to mistakes when it comes to predicting their actions. As is often the case, this is especially true of evil Gods.
