Whenever possible we use natural alternatives for flea and tick control, but since we live in a tick-endemic area we do use a Flea and Tick Collar on Isabel and Jeb when they go out during the day during tick season.
Many dogs especially small ones have reactions to these types of collars and we are working on reducing their use for our dogs. Alternatives we have been trying out on our dogs and in the yard are listed below:
Food-grade diatomaceous earth (DE) - Bug Squad
Wondercide - flea and tick spray. My dogs don't like to be "sprayed" so I spray a little in my hand and then rub it on them.
Nightly tick checks. Use a Tick Stick to remove ticks if the need arises.
Nematodes - in the yard
In order to protect the delicate nervous systems and other systems of the puppies, we will exclusively use only safe flea and tick deterrents such as those on the above list. Using those alternatives along with nightly brushing and tick checks should keep the puppies safe from infestation and avoid the risks of chemical treatments.
